Quick Summary

This article clearly maps how the once viral internet meme of "ugly cute" items has evolved into a sizeable, stable long-term business on Taobao, offering practical consumption guidance for general shoppers and actionable insights for aspiring light entrepreneurs.

1. For consumers: Products centered on quirky, ugly-cute aesthetics and emotional value now span every price tier, from RMB 19.9 affordable plush toys to RMB 100+ original designer pieces, and cater to all age groups from elementary school children to seniors seeking companionship. The category boasts a repurchase rate more than twice as high as the standard toy segment, with ample options for shoppers seeking low-cost stress-relief trinkets as well as design-forward, culturally resonant companion products. A free offline art exhibition dedicated to these "ugly" items is also open to visitors at Hangzhou's OōEli cultural complex.

2. For aspiring light entrepreneurs: Creators with niche aesthetic tastes and handcrafting skills do not need to pander to mainstream tastes. Leveraging the platform's non-standard product listing policies, they can connect directly with like-minded consumers and validate product demand through real orders. Even one-person handcraft shops and small teams can build stable, long-term small businesses by consistently launching new products and nurturing repeat customer relationships with personal, human-touch designs, while gaining public exposure through platform-hosted ugly item contests and offline exhibitions.

Consumption of ugly-cute products, a category driven by emotional value, has outgrown its short-lived meme origins to become a stable long-term market track, offering brands actionable takeaways for brand building, product R&D, channel strategy and pricing.

1. Consumption trends and user profiles: Categories such as plush toys are expanding to serve all age groups. While core users are Gen Z consumers born after 1995, the audience extends downward to young children and upward to seniors with companionship needs. Users are willing to pay for non-standard products that match their emotional states, carry cultural meaning and convey a human touch. The category maintains double-digit user growth, a repurchase rate twice as high as standard toys, and a new product sales share of over 30%, signaling substantial growth headroom.

2. Operational strategy takeaways: For product development, brands can learn from established players' cultural translation methodology: instead of rigidly replicating traditional IP, design around overlooked fringe characters and emotional pain points of modern consumers, building a competitive moat through product quality and cultural reinterpretation capabilities. On pricing, high-quality original designs can lift average order value from the RMB 10+ range to the RMB 100 tier, securing healthy profit margins. For channels, brands can form deep partnerships with Taobao to access shared resources via major shopping festivals, themed contests and offline exhibitions, while expanding to offline experience scenarios and overseas markets, and prioritizing intellectual property protection to guard against counterfeits.

The non-standard ugly-cute consumer track has developed mature, long-term operational logic, offering growth opportunities, replicable playbooks and risk avoidance guidance for sellers of all sizes.

1. Market opportunity: The cumulative sales of ugly-cute related products are projected to reach RMB 230 million by 2026, reaching tens of millions of young consumers. The plush toy subcategory records double-digit user growth, a repurchase rate twice as high as standard toys, and a new product sales share of over 30%, serving all age groups from 0 to 99. There is stable demand across price points from the RMB 19.9 entry tier to mid-to-high-end RMB 100+ offerings, and the platform has explicitly noted that the current supply pool for ugly-cute products remains insufficient to accommodate more merchants of diverse styles.

2. Actionable operational tactics: Small and medium-sized sellers do not need to force alignment with mainstream aesthetics. Leveraging the platform's accommodating policies for non-standard goods, they can list products directly to reach targeted users, and build long-term operations by continuously developing serialized SKUs, co-creating with fans, and nurturing repeat customers. They can also gain public traffic by participating in platform contests and offline exhibitions, and build multi-price-tier product lines following leading brands' logic of "cultural translation + emotional resonance".

3. Risk alerts: The platform enforces a dual screening mechanism: it protects intellectual property rights, and does not allocate traffic to purely copycat products. Pure trend-chasing replicas will struggle to gain visibility; only differentiated products with a human touch and unique creative expression can sustain long-term success.

The industry chain upgrade of categories such as plush toys driven by the ugly-cute economy points to new product directions, business opportunities and actionable transformation paths for traditional industrial belt factories and older facilities seeking transformation.

1. Product design demand: The plush toy market has shifted from a single category of low-cost, standardized bulk giveaway items to non-standard products across multiple price tiers and diverse styles. Consumers seek products that deliver emotional resonance, design appeal and a human touch, with stable demand spanning from RMB 19.9 affordable ugly-cute items to RMB 100+ high-quality original designs, covering full scenarios including children's companionship, young people's stress relief and senior companionship. Major plush toy industrial belts have already rolled out multi-price-tier layouts, and leading factories with strong capabilities can also explore developing their own brands.

2. Business cooperation opportunities: A large influx of original design teams, cultural and creative IPs, and individual handcraft creators into the track has created ample demand for flexible production and customized manufacturing, including stable orders for hand-crocheted products and IP derivative items. Crochet craft workers can earn RMB 8,000 to 10,000 per month during major promotion periods, leaving large room for production capacity matching.

3. Transformation takeaways: Traditional factories do not need to compete with automated production lines on standardized capacity. Instead, they can leverage advantages in handcrafting and flexible production to create warm, differentiated products that cannot be replicated by machines, and connect directly with consumers by launching Taobao stores. For example, a previously shuttered crochet factory in Chaoshan successfully revived its business by leaning into differentiated hand-crocheted products; factories can also introduce AI tools in the design process to improve efficiency.

The rapid growth of the non-standard ugly-cute consumer track points to new industry development directions for service providers of all types, while clarifying core pain points of merchants in the segment and corresponding service opportunities.

1. Industry development trends: Non-standard categories such as plush toys have moved past the stages of IP-driven growth and mass entry of original designers, entering a "digital life" phase where consumers participate in co-building IP. The customer base has expanded from young children to all age groups, and average price points have risen from the RMB 19.9 entry tier to the RMB 100 range. The category is expected to grow into an all-age mass market similar to building blocks, forming a multi-channel landscape covering online operations, offline experiences and overseas expansion.

2. Merchant pain point mapping: Merchants in the track range from transforming factories, small cultural and creative teams, and individual handcraft creators to leading original brands, sharing common needs including intellectual property protection, precise traffic matching, design efficiency improvement, supply chain connection, new channel expansion, and repeat customer operation.

3. Service direction references: Service providers can develop targeted solutions for these pain points, such as IP rights protection services, AI-assisted design tools, fan co-creation operation tools, supply chain matching, and channel connection services, to help merchants deliver differentiated products precisely to target customers in alignment with the platform's personalized recommendation mechanism.

The ugly-cute product track has grown from an internet meme to a RMB 230 million long-term business, providing a replicable practical sample for platforms' merchant operation, ecosystem building and category management, while clarifying future operational priorities.

1. Validated effective practices: Taobao has invested in ugly-cute related content for six consecutive years, helping niche creators gain exposure through online contests and offline exhibitions co-hosted with professional art institutions. Supported by its non-standard ecosystem where 85% of products come from micro, small and medium-sized merchants, the platform allows niche products to be listed without passing mainstream aesthetic screening, validating market demand through real transaction orders. It has also established a dual guarantee mechanism: building an IP protection system to defend original creators, while withholding traffic from low-quality copycat products, matching supply and demand via personalized recommendations, and sharing resources for major promotions, influencer collaborations and supply chain access with deeply partnered brands.

2. Operation and merchant recruitment direction: The current supply pool for ugly-cute products still has large room for expansion. Moving forward, the platform can recruit diverse merchants including individual handcraft creators, traditional craft operators, cultural IP teams, industrial belt factories and original brands, to cover all price tiers and all age groups. It will build a complete merchant growth path spanning exposure support, conversion validation, and brand building for merchants, support merchants in exploring new scenarios such as offline operations and overseas expansion, and extend the category's lifecycle.

3. Risk avoidance guidance: The platform should guard against the risk of trend-chasing imitation and assembly-line replicas diluting the core creative value of the category, avoid directing traffic to homogeneous, formulaic products, protect warm, differentiated non-standard supply, and maintain the long-term vitality of the track.

The case of Taobao's ugly-cute product track, which has grown from an internet meme to a mature industry with RMB 230 million in cumulative sales and tens of millions of consumers, reveals multiple notable new consumption trends, business models and emerging research propositions.

1. New industry dynamics: Structural changes are underway in traditional non-standard categories such as plush toys. The customer base has expanded from young children to all age groups spanning 0 to 99, average price points have upgraded from the RMB 19.9 entry tier to mid-to-high-end RMB 100 ranges, the category repurchase rate is more than twice that of standard toys, and new products account for over 30% of sales. All segments of the industry chain are maturing in parallel: upstream industrial belts are rolling out multi-price-tier product layouts and factories are testing private label brands; midstream original design teams and IPs continue to enter the market; downstream application scenarios keep expanding, with new channels such as offline experiences and overseas sales opening up.

2. Business model innovation: Unlike the scale-driven logic of traditional standardized products, the core value of this track lies in consumers paying for imperfect products with a human touch and unique expressive value. Supported by its non-standard ecosystem dominated by micro, small and medium-sized merchants, the platform has formed a niche aesthetic commercialization path of "public exposure – transaction validation – long-term operation", where operators of all sizes can find viable market space. AI serves as a symbiotic partner rather than a replacement for creators in the design process.

3. Emerging research questions: How to balance scale expansion and original creator protection in the commercialization of niche aesthetics; how to prevent copycat trends from dampening creative motivation; and how to sustain long-term repurchase for non-essential, emotional value-driven consumption are all directions worthy of ongoing tracking.

杭州天目里的展厅里,几节巨大的车厢由近及远一节小过一节,人走过去仿佛跌进了小人国;

再往里,一位妈妈照着自家孩子涂鸦捏出来的怪趣生物,错落摆在一起,活脱脱一版当代“山海经”;
