Quick Summary

Core points

1. Audi has clarified the division of responsibilities between its two Chinese partners: FAW Audi will focus on the four-ring brand, covering both ICE and NEV models; SAIC Audi will shift to the AUDI letter mark, prioritizing smart NEV models.

2. Transitional arrangement: SAIC Audi may continue selling four-ring models through the end of 2027, while existing after-sales service and dealer operations continue normally.

3. Key data: In 2025, FAW Audi retailed 570,088 vehicles and SAIC Audi 47,258, up 23% year on year. In the first half of 2026, Audi delivered 232,227 vehicles in China, down about 19.3% year on year, and China business earnings fell from EUR 279 million to EUR 73 million.

Operational watchpoints

1. SAIC Audi needs to build an AUDI-centered sales system during the transition. By the end of 2025, it had more than 200 user centers covering over 100 cities.

2. The Audi Innovation Technology Center will develop four new AUDI models based on the ADP 2.0 platform, with the first scheduled for launch in 2028.

3. After the end of 2027, production plans, channel authorization and dealer rights for four-ring models remain unclear—a variable that channels and car-buying decisions need to watch.

Brand division

1. FAW Audi retains the four-ring logo and relies on models such as the A6L and Q5L plus a mature dealer network, giving it fuller brand recognition; SAIC Audi shifts to the AUDI letter mark and develops smart NEVs with an independent product positioning.

2. Previously, the A5L and A5L Sportback entered two separate sales systems at similar price ranges, creating difficulties in brand image, pricing and channel-service coordination. The new division aims to reduce internal competition.

Channel and pricing

1. SAIC Audi may sell four-ring models through the end of 2027, and existing after-sales and dealer operations remain normal, giving the channel a transition period.

2. By the end of 2025, SAIC Audi had more than 200 user centers covering over 100 cities. Whether stores can sustain sales, inventory turnover and after-sales revenue on AUDI NEV products will directly affect channel stability.

Consumer and R&D

1. Luxury-car evaluation criteria are changing; advanced driver assistance, smart cockpits, powertrain forms and user experience are influencing purchase decisions.

2. The Audi Innovation Technology Center is owned 49% by SAIC, 41% by Audi and 10% by Volkswagen China. It will develop four AUDI models based on ADP 2.0, with the first launching in 2028, underscoring the importance of local R&D and product definition.

Policy and division

1. Audi signed a strategic agreement with FAW and SAIC, clarifying that FAW Audi will focus on the four-ring brand covering ICE and NEV models, while SAIC Audi shifts to the AUDI letter mark and prioritizes smart NEVs.

2. SAIC Audi may continue selling four-ring models through the end of 2027, with existing after-sales service and dealer operations continuing normally, creating a clear transition window.

Market and opportunities

1. In 2025, FAW Audi retailed 570,088 vehicles and SAIC Audi 47,258, up 23% year on year. SAIC Audi's scale remains small, however, and its growth rests on operating both four-ring models and the new AUDI brand.

2. In the first half of 2026, Audi delivered 232,227 vehicles in China, down about 19.3% year on year, while China business earnings fell nearly 74%, indicating pressure in the luxury-car market and that growth opportunities depend more on NEVs and smart features.

Risks and lessons

1. SAIC Audi must gradually build an AUDI sales system. After the end of 2027, production plans, channel authorization and dealer rights for four-ring models are unclear, creating channel uncertainty.

2. Lessons include clear brand boundaries, a transition period, and independent branding and local R&D to reduce internal competition. At the same time, SAIC Audi must prove it can still command brand premium without the four-ring logo.

Product and production demand

1. Under the new division, FAW Audi focuses on the four-ring brand covering ICE and NEV models; SAIC Audi shifts to the AUDI letter mark and prioritizes smart NEV models, with product design and powertrain strategy leaning toward intelligence and electrification.

2. The Audi Innovation Technology Center has full vehicle development capability and will develop four new AUDI models based on the ADP 2.0 platform, with the first planned for launch in 2028, meaning the AUDI product lineup will expand gradually.

Business opportunities

1. SAIC Audi may sell four-ring models through the end of 2027, with existing after-sales service and dealer operations continuing normally, leaving a transition period for related production and supply-chain adjustments.

2. By the end of 2025, SAIC Audi already had more than 200 user centers covering over 100 cities, providing a channel base for subsequent AUDI model introductions.

Uncertainty and implications

1. Audi has not announced full sales arrangements for four-ring models after the end of 2027; production plans for existing models, channel authorization and dealer rights remain to be clarified.

2. Locating R&D in China helps shorten the distance between local demand and product development, but whether new-model project initiation, intelligent-driving supplier selection, pricing and configuration, and technology roadmap decisions are made by Chinese teams still affects product implementation efficiency. The article does not directly address digitalization or e-commerce; factories can focus on local R&D, product platforms and production scheduling during the transition.

Industry trends

1. Audi is splitting its China business by brand: FAW Audi operates the four-ring brand, while SAIC Audi operates the AUDI letter mark. This reflects a shift in the luxury-car market from scale expansion toward brand boundaries and operating efficiency.

2. In the first half of 2026, Audi delivered 232,227 vehicles in China, down about 19.3% year on year. China business earnings fell from EUR 279 million to EUR 73 million, a drop of nearly 74%, as competition and profit pressure in the luxury-car market intensified.

Client pain points

1. During the dual-partner period, there were product overlaps, channel coordination and resource-allocation issues. After the A5L and A5L Sportback entered two systems at similar price ranges, promotion and channel-operating costs were duplicated.

2. SAIC Audi dealers face issues around product sales, inventory turnover, after-sales revenue and returns on prior investment after the brand adjustment. Four-ring model arrangements after the end of 2027 are unclear, putting pressure on channel stability.

Solutions

1. Use brand division to reduce internal competition and give SAIC Audi a transition period through the end of 2027 to sell four-ring models.

2. Promote local R&D through the Audi Innovation Technology Center, developing four AUDI models based on ADP 2.0, with the first launching in 2028. However, authority over new-model initiation, supplier selection, pricing and configuration, and technology roadmap remains unclear. Service providers can watch for service demand arising from smart NEV products, channel transformation and localized R&D.

Multi-brand operation

1. Audi has divided its China business into two brand systems: FAW Audi operates the four-ring brand, and SAIC Audi operates the AUDI letter mark. SAIC Audi may still sell four-ring models until the end of 2027, with existing after-sales and dealer operations continuing normally.

2. This arrangement is essentially platform-style multi-brand management: clear brand boundaries reduce product overlap and channel friction, while a transition period maintains dealer-system stability.

Channel and operations

1. By the end of 2025, SAIC Audi had more than 200 user centers covering over 100 cities. The brand switch is not just a change of showroom signage; it also involves product sales, inventory turnover, after-sales revenue and returns on prior investment.

2. Production plans, channel authorization and dealer rights for four-ring models after the end of 2027 are not yet clear—a key variable for channel operations and risk avoidance.

Decision-making and risk control

1. The Audi Innovation Technology Center is owned 49% by SAIC, 41% by Audi and 10% by Volkswagen China. It will develop four AUDI models, with the first launching in 2028. However, the Chinese team's autonomy over project initiation, supplier selection, pricing and configuration, and technology roadmap remains unclear.

2. Platform operators can learn from brand tiering, transition-period arrangements, prioritizing channel stability and localized R&D. Risks to guard against include rebuilding brand recognition, declining channel returns and insufficient headquarters decision-making efficiency.

New industry developments

1. Audi is ending nearly a decade of ambiguous division of labor between two partners and moving to two systems—FAW Audi with the four-ring brand and SAIC Audi with the AUDI letter mark. This is a case of a multinational automaker shifting from expansion-driven partnerships to brand-tiered operations in China.

2. In 2025, FAW Audi retailed 570,088 vehicles and SAIC Audi 47,258, up 23% year on year. In the first half of 2026, Audi delivered 232,227 vehicles in China, down about 19.3% year on year, and China business earnings fell from EUR 279 million to EUR 73 million, showing pressure on both scale and profitability.

New questions

1. The dual-partner model previously brought product overlaps, channel coordination and resource-allocation problems. The A5L and A5L Sportback were sold in two systems at similar price ranges, making internal competition and duplicated investment evident.

2. After the brand division, whether FAW Audi can preserve the four-ring brand's market scale and whether SAIC Audi can build brand awareness and premium with AUDI remain open questions. Production, channel authorization and dealer rights for four-ring models after the end of 2027 are unclear.

Organization and business model

1. The Audi Innovation Technology Center is owned 49% by SAIC, 41% by Audi and 10% by Volkswagen China. It will develop four AUDI models based on ADP 2.0, with the first launching in 2028, reflecting R&D localization and new joint-venture arrangements.

2. The key research question is how multinational headquarters and Chinese teams divide decision-making authority over project initiation, supplier selection, pricing and configuration, and technology roadmap. Brand division can reduce internal cannibalization, but organizational efficiency and profitability recovery still need to be observed.
