Quick Summary

This article summarizes the latest developments in the automotive chip industry, noting that the race for automotive chips has evolved from a competition for paper-spec computing power to a battle for industrial control of intelligent vehicles. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Current industry status: BYD has launched its self-developed 4nm smart driving chip, the璇玑 A3. Leading automakers including Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto are all advancing in-house chip development or AI computing architectures. Memory chip prices have risen sharply as AI data centers compete for production capacity, and Tesla’s supervised FSD, if launched in China, will further intensify competition in the smart driving sector.

2. Underlying industry shifts: Intelligent vehicles have transitioned from distributed architectures to centralized computing and integrated cabin-driving platforms. When selecting chips, automakers should look beyond paper-spec TOPS performance to prioritize practical capabilities such as effective computing power, security isolation, and software-hardware synergy.

3. Impact on consumers: Large-scale vehicle production shutdowns are not expected in 2026, but the industry will face higher vehicle costs, adjusted configurations, and delivery volatility. In-house chip development by leading automakers will accelerate and lower the cost of high-level intelligent driving adoption, enabling ordinary consumers to access affordable vehicles with high-level autonomous driving features faster.

This article outlines new trends in the automotive chip industry, with key takeaways addressing R&D, supply chain, and competition concerns for automaker brands:

1. Product R&D direction: In the era of intelligent vehicles, chips are the core of vehicle intelligent architecture. With large models being integrated into vehicles, simply purchasing off-the-shelf high-performance chips is no longer sufficient. Automakers need to prioritize synergy between chips, algorithms, models, and vehicle architecture. For integrated cabin-driving designs, the top priority is real-time isolation for tasks of different safety levels to meet the reliability requirements of intelligent driving functions.

2. Supply chain and pricing strategy: Memory chip prices have surged as AI capacity demand crowds out automotive sector supply. Key chip supply will generally tighten in 2026, which will directly push up vehicle costs. Automakers need to lock in orders and inventory in advance, adjust production scheduling, and re-prioritize their supply chains.

3. Competitive strategy: The launch of Tesla FSD will shift smart driving competition from feature rollout to a showdown of system-level capabilities. Leading automakers with annual sales exceeding 1 million units can deeply participate in chip definition or even develop chips in-house to seize the initiative in intelligentization, reduce the cost of high-level intelligent driving, and gain competitive market advantages.

Recent shifts in the automotive chip industry have created new market opportunities as well as clear risks. Key takeaways for relevant sellers are as follows:

1. Changing demand and market opportunities: The AI-driven upgrade of intelligent vehicles has boosted demand across all categories of automotive chips. Beyond high-performance main chips for intelligent driving, demand for niche chips such as automotive Ethernet PHY chips, BMS sampling analog chips, and 4D millimeter-wave radar chips is growing rapidly. The penetration of high-level intelligent driving into lower-tier markets will also drive demand for low-cost chip solutions, opening up significant market space.

2. Risk warnings: Rising memory chip prices have already transmitted through the entire automotive supply chain. Tightening key chip supply in 2026 will push up vehicle costs and cause delivery volatility. Sellers should adjust their inventory planning and pricing strategies in advance to mitigate delivery uncertainty.

3. Cooperation opportunities: As smart driving competition enters the system capability stage, most small and medium-sized automakers lack the capacity to develop chips in-house. Third-party chip and smart driving solution providers can develop tailored turnkey solutions to expand cooperation with smaller automakers and capture greater market share.

This article outlines new requirements for chip design and manufacturing in the era of intelligent vehicles, with the following opportunities and insights for vehicle OEMs and chip manufacturing facilities:

1. Product design and manufacturing requirements: Automotive-grade chip design cannot follow the same rules as consumer electronics. Beyond performance and power efficiency, chips must meet automotive-grade requirements for safety, reliability, redundancy, and long lifecycle certification. Integrated cabin-driving chips need to support real-time isolation for tasks of different safety levels and meet functional safety standards, while the integration of large models requires chips to deliver higher memory bandwidth and more efficient model deployment.

2. Business opportunities: Beyond high-performance main smart driving chips, demand for a range of smaller chips is growing rapidly, including automotive Ethernet communication chips, battery management analog chips, and 4D millimeter-wave radar chips, all of which represent clear growth areas for the future. Against the backdrop of AI capacity competition, automotive-grade chip demand is stable, so facilities with available production capacity will capture more order opportunities.

3. Insights for digital upgrading: To advance intelligent upgrading, vehicle OEMs need to deeply participate in chip definition, align the synergy between chips, algorithms, and vehicle architecture, drive the upgrade of electronic and electrical architectures to centralized computing, and build their own core intelligent capabilities.

This article summarizes the latest development trends of the automotive chip industry and identifies core industry pain points and development directions for reference by relevant service providers:

1. Industry development trends: Automotive chip competition has evolved from a simple battle for computing power to a fight for industrial control of intelligent vehicles. The integration of large models is driving in-vehicle chips to upgrade from traditional computing platforms to AI inference platforms. Third-party chip service providers are already transitioning from single-chip suppliers to full-stack smart driving solution providers, undergoing a fundamental role restructuring.

2. Core customer pain points: Key pain points for automakers include tight memory chip supply and sharp price increases; high cost, long lead times, and high risk of in-house chip development that is out of reach for most small and medium-sized automakers; and off-the-shelf chips that cannot match their specific electronic architecture and algorithm iteration needs, leaving them constrained by the supplier’s technology roadmap and delivery schedule.

3. Solution direction: Third-party service providers can transform into full-stack intelligent driving capability providers, offering end-to-end solutions integrating chips, algorithms, toolchains, and mass production deployment. This model delivers better cost efficiency and faster mass production than in-house development by automakers, allowing providers to become intelligent system partners for car companies and unlock new growth opportunities.

This article analyzes new demand for intelligent computing platforms from the current industry, providing the following reference for platform operators’ operations and risk mitigation:

1. New industry demand: Automakers are no longer satisfied with purchasing standalone chips; they require platforms to provide a complete intelligent computing base that can support end-to-end models, large model inference, and long-term OTA updates. This requires deep synergy between chips, algorithms, models, and vehicle architecture.

2. Latest development direction for platforms: Leading industry platforms have already started strategic transformation. Qualcomm has expanded from standalone infotainment chips to integrated cabin-driving platforms and in-vehicle intelligent ecosystems, competing for the computing entry point and developer ecosystem of intelligent vehicles. Horizon has transitioned from a single-chip supplier to a smart driving solution provider, offering end-to-end services covering algorithms, toolchains, and mass production deployment.

3. Operations and risk mitigation: Against the trend of leading automakers developing in-house chips, platform operators need to clarify their positioning, build open ecosystems, and highlight their advantages in cost efficiency, mass production speed, and ecosystem openness to mitigate the risk of being replaced by in-house development. They also need to lock in memory and production capacity resources in advance to cope with supply volatility caused by AI capacity competition.

This article organizes the latest developments and core contradictions of the current automotive chip industry, outlining new research directions for industrial research:

1. New industry developments: The automotive chip race has evolved from competition over paper-spec computing power to a battle for industrial control of intelligent vehicles. Leading new energy automakers are increasingly shifting from purchasing chips off-the-shelf to defining or even developing chips in-house, while third-party chip platform providers are transitioning to ecosystem service providers. The growth of AI has reshaped global semiconductor capacity allocation rules and profit rankings, pushing automotive supply chains down the priority list for capacity.

2. Emerging industrial issues: AI data centers are siphoning off memory and semiconductor capacity, driving up memory chip prices and reducing supply stability for the automotive industry, pushing up vehicle costs and causing delivery volatility. The barrier to in-house chip development is so high that only automakers with annual sales of 1 million units can successfully adopt this route, leaving most small and medium-sized automakers unable to follow. The business model and valuation framework for third-party chip suppliers are currently undergoing restructuring.

3. Research directions for business models: The industry has now formed two mainstream competitive routes: the closed route where leading automakers develop in-house chips to control architectural initiative, and the open route where third-party platforms offer integrated chips, algorithms, and ecosystems. The competitive landscape and development prospects of these two routes remain unclear, making this a new industrial topic well worth continued tracking and research.

车企想拿回定义权;

平台型芯片公司想占住计算入口;

智驾方案供应商想证明自己仍然是最优解;
