1.不要被行业固有定价逻辑限制,先锚定清晰定位再匹配对应价值支撑,能有效避开低价内卷;

2.推广大众陌生的产品时,不用先强行教育用户接受背后的文化,直接绑定用户熟悉的日常场景,能大幅降低试错门槛;

Fly By Jing

1.营销上不强行教育用户接受四川饮食文化,而是绑定披萨、汉堡、沙拉等本地日常食用场景降低试错门槛,用符合精品食品定位的包装设计吸引高端渠道主动合作;

Fly By Jing

Fly By Jing

1.不必长期陷入低价代工的内卷,可依托本地特色原料与工艺,对接主打高端出海的品牌客户,用稳定的品质支撑品牌的高溢价定位;

Fly By Jing

1.可打造从价值锚点梳理、定价策略到文化叙事的全套品牌建设服务,帮助品牌打破低价认知;

2.可提供本地场景化营销、社媒传播服务,帮助品牌降低用户教育成本;

Fly By Jing

Fly By Jing

1.这套模式核心是用地理标志性原料与工艺建立价值锚点,用清洁标签对接本地消费标准,用场景绑定降低文化隔阂,再通过多SKU、多品类矩阵提升用户生命周期价值,用稀缺限定礼赠产品打造年度品牌事件;

Quick Summary

This article breaks down the core logic behind Fly By Jing, a Sichuan-born chili sauce brand that has found strong commercial success in the U.S. market despite being priced three times higher than Lao Gan Ma, with a set of valuable, actionable takeaways for creators and small business operators.

1. Key performance metrics: As of 2025, the brand posts 27% annual unit sales growth, ranking first in both the premium segment and distribution coverage of the U.S. chili crisp category. It is available in more than 12,000 retail locations nationwide, generates tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue, and has successfully overturned the long-held stereotype of Chinese food as a cheap, low-value option in overseas markets.

The case also offers practical, replicable lessons for anyone launching a product or small project:

1. Do not be constrained by entrenched industry pricing norms. Set a clear positioning first, then match it with corresponding value support to effectively avoid cutthroat low-price competition.

2. When promoting a product unfamiliar to mass audiences, do not force users to learn about its associated culture first. Instead, tie the product directly to familiar daily use scenarios to drastically lower the trial barrier.

3. When expanding into new business lines, align moves with your existing capabilities and profit model, rather than expanding blindly based solely on positive user feedback.

Fly By Jing’s premium overseas expansion playbook holds strong reference value for brand building, particularly for Chinese consumer brands pursuing global markets, spanning pricing, brand positioning, marketing and product R&D.

1. On pricing strategy: The brand stepped out of the low-price comparison framework applied to most Chinese food products, instead setting prices in line with premium competing products. This approach not only helped it avoid price wars, but also established premium brand perception immediately through price point, while opening up upward pricing space for the broader Asian condiment category.

2. On brand value building: It anchors its irreplaceable value proposition in iconic Sichuan local ingredients and production processes, paired with vegan, sugar-free, additive-free clean labels that align with mainstream overseas health consumption preferences, using cultural narrative to dismantle the stereotype of Chinese food as low-cost.

Its moves across marketing, channel and product development also align precisely with consumer trends and user behavior patterns:

1. In marketing, it avoids forcing consumers to learn about Sichuan food culture, instead tying products to local daily eating scenarios such as pizza, burgers and salads to lower trial barriers, while using premium, specialty-food-aligned packaging to attract proactive partnership interest from high-end retail channels.

2. On the product side, it iterates chili sauce SKUs across varying heat levels and textures, while expanding into adjacent categories such as noodles and holiday gift sets to cover more consumption scenarios.

The Fly By Jing case highlights new market dividend opportunities, replicable operational playbooks and clear operational risks for cross-border sellers, especially those in the food category.

1. Market opportunity: There is a notable supply gap for mid-to-premium Asian food across mainstream overseas retail channels. Consumer demand for spicy flavors, multicultural cuisines and clean-label products is growing rapidly; while the low-price segment is highly saturated, the mid-to-premium price band offers clear entry dividends for sellers.

2. Replicable cold start and operational playbooks: Sellers can first validate product-market fit via crowdfunding platforms in the initial stage, acquiring early seed users by clearly communicating brand story and product value. In the promotion phase, tie products to local daily consumption scenarios, and leverage social media content such as "chili crisp pairs with everything" to reduce user trial costs. Sellers can also target holiday gifting scenarios with limited-edition products, using scarcity to boost repeat purchase rates and social sharing intent.

The case also flags clear operational risks:

1. Category expansion must not stray beyond the boundaries of core operational capabilities. For example, the brand once expanded into frozen dumplings, but ultimately discontinued the line due to misalignment across cold chain logistics, supply chain and margin structure. Sellers must validate the fit of a new business model before scaling into new categories.

Fly By Jing’s overseas success points to clear product design directions and new commercial opportunities for domestic food manufacturers, along with market-aligned development insights.

1. Clear market demand on the production side: High-end overseas food markets place significant value on product origin authenticity. Despite tariff pressures, the brand retains its Sichuan-based supply chain, using geographically indicated ingredients such as Erjingtiao chili and Hanyuan tribute pepper, paired with small-batch handcrafted simmering processes. Products with distinct regional characteristics and solid craftsmanship carry strong premium pricing power. Meanwhile, mainstream overseas markets have widespread requirements for clean labels: vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free, artificial additive-free products gain much easier access to mainstream sales channels.

The commercial opportunities and development directions for manufacturers are clear:

1. Factories do not need to remain trapped in cutthroat low-margin contract manufacturing competition. They can leverage local specialty ingredients and processes to partner with premium-focused global brands, using stable quality to support brands’ high-premium positioning.

2. Factories can support brands with flexible product iteration, developing segmented SKUs across different heat levels, textures and target user groups, while paying close attention to supply chain requirement differences across categories, to avoid盲目 taking on category orders that exceed their operational capacity.

Fly By Jing’s growth path clearly illustrates current industry trends in the cross-border food sector, as well as the core pain points of brand clients, pointing to clear service optimization directions for service providers.

1. Industry trend level: Chinese food global expansion is shifting from the old model of "trading low prices for scale" to a new path of building premium value through product strength and cultural narrative. There is a large supply gap for mid-to-premium Asian food across mainstream overseas channels, with particularly fast growth in spicy food products, clean-label products and products adapted to diverse consumption scenarios.

2. Core pain points for brand clients: First, they are long constrained by the overseas stereotype of Chinese food as low-cost, making it difficult to build premium brand perception. Second, products associated with unfamiliar cultural attributes face high barriers to getting local consumers to try them. Third, brands often encounter mismatches in supply chain and channel fit when expanding into new categories.

Service providers can develop targeted solutions to address these pain points:

1. Build end-to-end brand building services covering value proposition framing, pricing strategy and cultural narrative development, to help brands break low-price perceptions.

2. Offer localized scenario-based marketing and social media communication services to help brands reduce user education costs.

3. Provide full-chain assessment services for brands prior to category extension, to reduce losses caused by blind expansion.

The Fly By Jing case offers clear reference for merchant recruitment, product curation, user operation and risk management across e-commerce and retail platforms.

1. On merchant recruitment and product curation: Platforms can prioritize two types of high-growth potential brands. The first is cross-border food brands like Fly By Jing that build high-value positioning around distinctive regional ingredients and craftsmanship; these brands fill supply gaps for mid-to-premium specialty food on platforms and carry built-in viral conversation potential. The second is food brands aligned with health consumption trends, featuring clean labels and catering to diverse dietary needs; these products match mainstream consumer expectations and demonstrate strong sell-through performance.

The case also offers clear insights for platform operation and risk mitigation:

1. On the operation side, platforms can guide merchants to create scenario-based content, for example encouraging merchants to share ways to pair specialty foods with local daily meals, to lower consumer trial barriers and drive category-wide sales. Platforms can also build dedicated holiday gifting zones, guiding merchants to launch limited-edition, scarcity-driven products to boost user repeat purchase and social sharing intent.

2. On risk management, platforms should guide merchants to pursue rational category expansion, reminding merchants to assess the alignment of new categories’ supply chain, logistics, margin structure with their own capabilities, to reduce operational risk.

The Fly By Jing case provides a highly valuable new sample for research on China’s food export industry, highlighting emerging industry trends and new business models worthy of in-depth study.

1. Emerging industry trends: For decades, Chinese food exports followed a long-standing path of "trading low prices for scale", with brand value systematically undervalued. A new path has now emerged, where brands enter high-end mainstream overseas channels via high pricing and strong value anchors, breaking the overseas stereotype of Chinese food as cheap and low-quality. Existing research shows that pricing of immigrant cuisines is highly correlated with the development level of their country of origin and the social status of corresponding immigrant groups, while consumers’ low-price trial expectations for unfamiliar flavors are also a key driver of cuisine-related price discounts. Fly By Jing’s practice proves that such perceptual price discounts can be overturned through systematic operation.

The case also demonstrates new business models and industry insights worthy of deeper exploration:

1. The core of this model is to establish value anchors via geographically indicated ingredients and craftsmanship, align with local consumption standards via clean labels, reduce cultural barriers via scenario integration, lift customer lifetime value via a multi-SKU, multi-category matrix, and create annual brand moments via scarce, limited-edition gifting products.

2. This case proves that Chinese flavors can achieve product premium through cultural expression when expanding globally, without being locked into long-term low-price competition tracks, offering new reference for future industry policy formulation and support for global expansion brands.

Fly By Jing

Fly By Jing

跳出比价框架,避免陷入“凭什么贵这么多”的价格战;

立住高端品牌形象——先有价签,再有认知,而不是反过来;

Fly By Jing

上市之初,品牌便联手纽约和洛杉矶的几家冰淇淋店,推广辣椒脆配冰淇淋的吃法——这一反常识的搭配,自带拍照和传播的理由,也勾起人们“它还能浇在什么上”的想象;

Fly By Jing
