Quick Summary

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) startups are collectively launching second brands, a trend that stands in sharp contrast to traditional automakers' strategy of consolidating their brand portfolios. Below is a summary of key takeaways:

1. Core motivations for launching second brands: Technological competition in the industry has hit a ceiling, with diminishing marginal returns from piling up technical specifications and growing product homogenization. Leading NEV startups have already built mature systemic competitiveness, and in the current era of stock competition, they need to expand their market footprint early while meeting capital markets' expectations for stronger brand potential.

2. Differences in multi-brand logic between NEV startups and traditional automakers: NEV startups adopt a bottom-up expansion path: they first deepen their core single brand, then expand into upper and lower price segments. By contrast, traditional automakers spin off resources from top to down to build sub-brands. NEV startups maintain clear positioning and wide price gaps between their core and secondary brands, making internal friction far less likely.

3. Current industry consensus: Multi-brand strategies for NEV startups carry risks including internal friction, resource misallocation, and reduced organizational efficiency. A "one core + one secondary" dual-brand structure is currently seen as the optimal solution. The core test for startups launching second brands is protecting the technological moat of their core brand.

As the NEV industry enters an era of stock competition, the collective launch of second brands by NEV startups offers valuable strategic insights for automotive brand owners. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Consumer and industry trends: After technological competition hit a ceiling, consumers are increasingly indifferent to differences in specifications such as range and computing power. Competition has shifted from product performance to systemic capability. Gaps in repeat purchase and upgrade conversion rates among leading brands have widened, making layered brand positioning a core strategic priority for top players.

2. Reference for brand layout logic: NEV startups adopt a bottom-up expansion approach: they first build solid core brand awareness before expanding into new price segments, dividing user groups through clear price tiering. They share underlying technology, supply chains and charging infrastructure, while running differentiated product development and marketing for separate brands, which avoids internal friction from the outset.

3. Risk warnings: Brand owners should proactively prevent three core risks: overlapping pricing that sparks internal competition, weakened core brand that erodes its premium, and lowered decision-making efficiency from increased organizational complexity. We recommend a "unified middle platform + independent front end" organizational structure, and strictly controlling the expansion pace of the second brand.

The NEV industry is entering a period of layered brand restructuring, which brings both new opportunities and risks for automotive sellers. Key insights are summarized below:

1. Industry changes and opportunities: NEV market competition has shifted from incremental growth to stock competition. As NEV startups rush to launch second brands and traditional automakers consolidate their portfolios, the entire industry's brand landscape is being reshaped, bringing new incremental cooperation opportunities for sellers. Second brands expand both into the mass mass-market segment and the high-end segment, and new brands of all positioning need to build new sales channels, creating substantial room for new dealer partnerships and growth.

2. Guidance for opportunity selection: Sellers should prioritize partnering with brands that adopt the "one core + one secondary" dual-brand structure and have already built solid systemic competitiveness with their core brand. These brands have clear positioning, explicit division of labor and greater growth potential. For example, Leapmotor first secured its core brand base before using a second brand to target the high-end market, a pace that delivers higher stability.

3. Risk warnings: Sellers should avoid projects with vague positioning, simultaneous launches of multiple brands, or core brands with insufficient systemic capability. Watch for internal brand friction that diverts channel resources, which will undermine long-term growth and hurt your own profits. Second brands launched prematurely without full preparation carry a very high risk of failure.

The collective expansion into second brands by NEV startups has brought new demand, business opportunities and transformation insights for automotive manufacturing plants. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Changes in product and production design demand: Second brands from NEV startups generally use a development model of shared underlying technology platforms and differentiated upper-layer product design. This has significantly increased demand for flexible production, requiring factories to accommodate the production needs of differently positioned vehicles on the same technical platform. This setup lowers per-model production costs and meets startups' operational requirements of "joint procurement + flexible production".

2. Business opportunities: There is now a clear divergence in capacity utilization across the industry. The expansion of second brands by leading NEV startups has created new capacity cooperation demand. Factories with flexible production capabilities that deliver stable, efficient production services will win more cooperation orders from leading brands and see substantial room for growth.

3. Transformation insights: The multi-brand trend among NEV startups requires more flexible and efficient production. To adapt to the production needs of multi-brand strategies and capture more cooperation opportunities amid industry change, factories must accelerate digital transformation to improve flexible production capabilities and resource allocation efficiency.

The new shift in brand strategy in the NEV industry has brought new industry trends, client pain points and business directions for automotive industry service providers. Key insights are summarized below:

1. Industry development trends: The NEV market has shifted from incremental expansion to stock competition, and competition has moved from technological specification competition to systemic brand competition. Layered multi-brand layout has become a shared strategic choice for leading NEV startups, spawning substantial new service demand related to multi-brand operations.

2. Core client pain points: NEV startups launching second brands commonly face pain points including conflicting resource allocation, vague positioning, reduced organizational efficiency and internal friction. They also need support across multiple areas: organizational restructuring, brand positioning consulting, flexible production transformation, and multi-brand operation management.

3. Business expansion directions: Service providers can develop offerings aligned with the multi-brand layout needs of NEV startups, including management systems adapted to the "unified middle platform + independent front end" organizational structure, brand positioning consulting, and digital production transformation solutions. These offerings help NEV startups balance resource conflicts in multi-brand operations and build brand risk control mechanisms, with substantial untapped market demand.

The trend of NEV startups collectively launching second brands has brought new demand, opportunities and operational directions for automotive platform operators. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. New demand from NEV startups for platforms: Second brands of different positioning have differentiated operational requirements for platforms. High-end positioned second brands need precise traffic aligned with their brand tonality, while second brands targeting the mass market need support for large-scale customer acquisition. This places higher requirements on platforms' layered operation capabilities.

2. Investment attraction and growth opportunities for platforms: Launching second brands is a core strategic priority for leading NEV startups today, and a large number of new brands need to expand online and offline sales channels. Platforms can launch targeted investment incentive policies for new second brands to attract them to onboard, enrich the platform's brand matrix, and expand their own revenue space.

3. Risk mitigation: When onboarding new brands, platforms should prioritize verifying the clarity of brand positioning and the systemic capability of the core brand. Avoid onboarding new brands with overlapping positioning or insufficient resource preparation to reduce the waste of channel resources caused by eventual brand failure. Platforms can also develop layered operation tools tailored for multi-brand strategies to help brands segment user groups and improve operational efficiency.

The emerging trend of leading Chinese NEV startups collectively launching second brands opens new directions and draws new conclusions for industry research. Key core insights are as follows:

1. New industry development: Against the backdrop of traditional automakers broadly scaling back their brand portfolios, leading NEV startups are moving in the opposite direction by launching second brands. This marks that NEV competition has shifted from technological specification competition to systemic brand competition, and the industry has officially transitioned from incremental expansion to stock competition. This is a critical inflection point in the development of China's automotive industry.

2. Characteristics of the new business model: The multi-brand strategy of NEV startups follows a bottom-up layout logic, which is completely different from the top-down resource splitting model of traditional automakers. They generally adopt a "unified middle platform + independent front end" architecture: sharing underlying resources while running independent upper-layer operations, forming a division of labor where "the core brand holds the base, and the second brand opens new ground". This is fundamentally different from traditional multi-brand models.

3. Unresolved research questions and implications: Current NEV multi-brand strategies face three core risks: internal friction, resource misallocation, and reduced organizational efficiency. Early industry evidence suggests the "one core + one secondary" dual-brand structure is the optimal solution for the current stage. This industry trend provides an entirely new sample for research on the evolution of Chinese automotive brand strategy, and offers important reference value for research on high-quality development paths of the NEV industry.
