Quick Summary

This article centers on Nike's major channel restructuring in the Chinese market, with key takeaways as follows:

1. Core event: Nike will revoke the mainland China online sales rights of Topsports and Baosheng, its two distributors with 27 years of partnership, effective January 1, 2027. Thousands of online stores operated by these distributors will be shut down. Following the announcement, Topsports' Hong Kong-listed shares plummeted 24.08%, wiping out a quarter of its market capitalization. The restructuring affects only online channels; offline distribution partnerships remain unchanged.

2. Rationale for the change: Nike's Greater China revenue has declined for eight consecutive quarters. The root cause lies in fragmented online channels, where distributors run rampant discounting to clear inventory, eroding Nike's premium brand positioning. Additionally, distributors control user data, leaving Nike unable to accurately understand Chinese consumer demand.

3. Nike's post-adjustment plan: Nike will retain only five official online entry points: its official website, Nike App, Tmall, JD.com and Douyin. The goal is to unify pricing control, own user data, boost profits, and crack down on cross-channel arbitrage and counterfeit goods.

Nike's channel restructuring offers valuable insights for sports brands across multiple dimensions, with key takeaways as follows:

1. Current industry and consumer trends: Traditional international sports brands are losing continuous market share in China. Local brand Anta has held the top spot in China's market share for four consecutive years. Professional brands in niche segments such as running and outdoor sports are growing extremely fast. Relying on rampant discounting to drive volume severely damages brand premium and is an unsustainable development model.

2. Lessons for channel development: Fragmented online channels managed by multiple distributors disrupt pricing systems, lower brand positioning, and prevent brands from directly owning user data, which undermines product R&D decisions and harms long-term brand growth.

3. Actionable transformation references: Brands can adopt Nike's compromise approach: take back online direct sales to unify pricing control and accumulate user data, while retaining offline distributors to cover lower-tier markets. They can also reference Anta's DTC transformation to increase the proportion of direct sales. On the product side, brands should focus on core categories and advance localized R&D, instead of resting on past brand premium.

Nike's channel restructuring delivers clear risk warnings and new opportunities for sports category sellers, with key takeaways as follows:

1. Risk warning: Sellers who currently hold Nike online authorization will lose the right to sell Nike products online starting 2027. They should adjust their business plans in advance to avoid operational disruption after the deadline.

2. Opportunity alert: After losing Nike's online authorization, leading distributors like Topsports will inevitably expand their offline layout and increase agency for other fast-growing new brands. Sellers with access to partnership resources can seize these opportunities.

3. Category opportunities: In the current sports market, running and outdoor sports are high-growth segments. Niche brands such as HOKA, On Running and Kailas are growing extremely rapidly. Sellers can布局 these segments early to capture new growth dividends.

4. Operational reference: Sellers can follow Topsports' multi-brand portfolio strategy to reduce reliance on a single leading brand and diversify operational risks.

Nike's channel restructuring and industry shifts offer multiple insights for sports goods manufacturers, with key takeaways as follows:

1. Shifts in product manufacturing and design demand: The era when traditional sports brands could rely on their logo alone to command premium is over. Consumers today favor professional products in niche segments, and demand for high-growth categories such as running and outdoor sports continues to rise. Factories can adjust their manufacturing and R&D focus to adapt to this new demand.

2. New business opportunities: International brands like Nike have started advancing localized R&D and manufacturing in China, with a clear plan to launch localized China-made products for the 2027 holiday season. Domestic factories with design and manufacturing capabilities can pursue relevant partnership opportunities to expand their business.

3. Insights for digital transformation: Fragmented channels prevent brands from accessing complete user data and hinder product development. When advancing digital and e-commerce transformation, factories should prioritize integrating and accumulating consumer consumption data, using data to inform product design and manufacturing adjustments to align with market demand.

The ongoing channel transformation in the sports brand industry points to new development directions for relevant service providers, with key takeaways as follows:

1. Industry development trend: DTC (direct-to-consumer) transformation has expanded from the new energy industry to the sporting goods industry, and has become a common choice for leading brands. Anta launched its DTC reform as early as 2020, and now the proportion of its direct sales business exceeds 80%. More brands will follow suit in channel reform, driving sustained growth in related demand.

2. Core pain points for brands: Brands currently face three core pain points. First, fragmented online channels managed by multiple distributors lead to pricing chaos that continuously erodes brand premium. Second, distributors control user data, so brands cannot directly understand consumer demand, which harms product R&D. Third, online cross-channel arbitrage and counterfeiting are hard to regulate, damaging brand image.

3. Business opportunities: Service providers can develop offerings aligned with brands' DTC transformation needs, such as online channel operation, cross-channel pricing management, and user data asset management, to capitalize on the wave of brand channel upgrading. Meanwhile, the rise of local brands and niche new brands also brings more new customer demand.

Nike's revocation of online distribution rights brings new opportunities and operational adjustment directions for e-commerce platforms, with key takeaways as follows:

1. Core demands of leading brands: Leading brands' core demands for online channels today are unifying brand image, unifying product pricing, and fully controlling user data. The original model of dispersed stores run by multiple merchants no longer meets leading brands' development needs, so platforms need to adjust operational rules to accommodate the direct sales needs of leading brands.

2. Current industry developments: After the restructuring, Nike will retain only its official flagship store entries on three third-party platforms: Tmall, JD.com and Douyin. These three platforms will gain more traffic and business growth from leading brands' direct sales operations. Other platforms can adjust their merchant recruitment strategies to attract small and medium-sized brands and fast-growing niche brands to optimize their brand portfolio.

3. Risk mitigation directions: After leading distributors lose the online rights of big brands, they will adjust their brand portfolios. Platforms can seize this opportunity to onboard more fast-growing niche sports brands to enrich their brand matrix. Meanwhile, they should strengthen regulation of cross-channel arbitrage and counterfeit goods to improve platform reputation and mitigate compliance risks.

Nike's channel restructuring reflects multiple new trends in the global sporting goods industry, with key insights for research as follows:

1. New industry landscape shifts: The global sporting goods industry landscape has undergone profound changes. Local brands in China have overtaken international brands in market share; Anta has ranked first in China's market for four consecutive years. Specialist niche brands are increasingly eroding the market share of traditional leading giants, and the brand premium of traditional international giants continues to decline, meaning original industry rules are being reshaped.

2. New changes in business models: DTC direct transformation has become cross-industry mainstream. Today, leading brands generally adopt a compromise direct model: taking back online direct operations to control pricing and user data, while retaining offline distributors to cover lower-tier markets. This model balances brand control and channel coverage efficiency, fits the characteristics of the Chinese market, and represents a new direction for channel transformation.

3. New industry issues: Brand channel restructuring will impact long-standing relationships with existing distributors; this adjustment has already wiped out a quarter of Topsports' market capitalization in the short term. How to balance channel transformation and the interests of partner stakeholders is a new issue the industry needs to resolve. Localized R&D and manufacturing by international brands has also become a new industry trend with high research value.
