Quick Summary

This article centers on Midea's portable air conditioner sales surge driven by the European heatwave, noting that Midea's globalization is still in an awkward stage and has not firmly established itself in the European market. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Background and strengths of the sales boom: This year, extreme heat in Europe has transformed air conditioners from luxury goods to essential products. Midea's PortaSplit portable split air conditioner accurately addresses pain points in the European market, with localized adaptations tailored to regulations and demands of different countries — for example, it meets Germany's noise standards, controls refrigerant weight as required by France, and satisfies the UK's outdoor unit installation requirements. As of June 2024, Midea's B2B shipments in Europe have doubled year-over-year, and sales in Germany in the first half of the year exceeded 60,000 units.

2. Current shortcomings: The top-selling portable AC is a niche category in the European HVAC market, accounting for only 6% to 7% of the market with annual growth of just 2%. It is a second-choice emergency product for consumers, with low repurchase rates. It has failed to drive sales of Midea's other product categories and has left the brand with a low-cost reputation. Meanwhile, the integration of overseas brands Midea acquired previously has underperformed, and its high-end brand COLMO has yet to gain traction in the European market, leaving long-term growth uncertain.

This article analyzes the current status, experience, and challenges of Chinese home appliance brands expanding into Europe, offering high reference value for the strategic layout of globalizing brands. Key insights are as follows:

1. Market and consumer trends: Europe has become one of the fastest-warming regions globally, and consumers now view air conditioners as an essential necessity rather than a non-essential luxury. Structural pain points of the European market — including difficult installation, strict approval requirements, and high labor costs — have created growth opportunities for well-adapted products.

2. Actionable experience: Instead of simply rebranding domestic products for export, Midea adapted its product development to match the regulations, consumer demands and architectural characteristics of different European countries. This localized product strategy is a valuable lesson for all globalizing Chinese brands.

3. Key risks to watch: Short-term traffic-driven growth can rarely be converted into long-term brand equity. Penetrating core markets one by one delivers better results than rapid broad expansion. High-end brands cannot rely on existing value-for-money sales channels; they need an independent system to build high-end brand perception, otherwise they will fall into the trap of muddled positioning.

This article outlines the opportunities and risks in the European air conditioner market, providing clear directional guidance for cross-border home appliance sellers. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Market opportunity: As persistent heatwaves hit Europe, air conditioning has become a necessity. Traditional split-system air conditioners have extremely high installation barriers, creating a clear unmet demand for portable mobile air conditioners. Midea's recent sales boom has validated that properly localized products can achieve explosive growth.

2. Risk warning: Portable air conditioners are a niche emergency category with small market size and low growth. Most purchases are one-off for temporary use, with low repurchase rates, making it difficult to build brand loyalty. They also tend to anchor brands as low-cost, and cannot drive full-category sales, so they should not be positioned as core long-term products.

3. Reference experience: Avoid unfocused broad expansion. Follow Haier's "penetrate one market before moving to the next" focused strategy, concentrating resources to break through core strategic markets. High-end brands must adopt independent operation strategies; do not sell premium products using the same tactics as value products, to avoid positioning dilution.

This article analyzes the demand characteristics of the European home appliance market, providing product development directions and business insights for Chinese home appliance manufacturers expanding overseas. Key insights are as follows:

1. Product design and manufacturing requirements: The European market has unique localized requirements for air conditioners. Many historic buildings ban exterior wall drilling, while ordinary homes face complicated installation approval, a shortage of professional technicians, and extremely high installation costs. As a result, drill-free, movable products that do not require professional installation are far more popular. In addition, different countries have distinct regulatory requirements: Germany restricts nighttime operating noise, France caps refrigerant weight, and the UK regulates outdoor unit installation. Product development must include targeted adaptations, rather than directly copying designs for the Chinese market.

2. Business opportunity: Climate change has transformed air conditioners from non-essential goods to necessities in Europe. The overall market is large with clear demand growth, and products adapted to local needs have significant room for growth. Chinese home appliance manufacturers have strong enough supply chain advantages to capture this opportunity.

3. Transformation insights: Overseas expansion cannot stop at OEM manufacturing. Companies must prioritize localized product innovation, lay out core mainstream product categories in advance, and do not rely solely on niche emergency categories. Only by gradually building brand equity can they achieve sustained long-term growth.

This article summarizes industry trends and core pain points for Chinese home appliance brands expanding into Europe, providing business direction guidance for relevant cross-border service providers. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Industry development trends: As climate change drives a demand inflection point for explosive growth in the European air conditioner market, a large number of Chinese home appliance brands are shifting from OEM export to own-brand expansion, accelerating their layout in mature European markets. This has driven rapid growth in demand for professional localized services, creating significant market opportunities for service providers.

2. Core pain points of clients: Current cross-border home appliance brands generally face three core pain points. First, integration after overseas acquisition is difficult: acquired brands, channels and technologies rarely generate synergies with the acquirer's existing system, so the expected value of the acquisition is never realized. Second, building a high-end brand is challenging: the operation logic of existing value-for-money channels does not match high-end brand positioning, making it difficult to build premium perception. Third, most brands adopt broad expansion strategies instead of penetrating core markets, so they fail to build stable brand equity.

3. Business opportunities: Service providers can develop targeted services such as localized brand operation, M&A integration consulting, and high-end brand channel development to address these pain points. This allows them to capture the windfall of Chinese home appliance brands going global and expand their own business boundaries.

This article analyzes the needs of Chinese home appliance brands for platform services during their expansion into Europe, providing direction for platform merchant recruitment and operation adjustment. Key insights are as follows:

1. Core demands of brands on platforms: Chinese home appliance brands expanding into Europe need two key types of support from platforms. On one hand, they need traffic and exposure to build recognition among local consumers. On the other hand, they need tiered operation services to meet the development needs of brands with different positioning, especially high-end brands that require operation scenarios aligned with their premium positioning.

2. Problems with current platform operations: The prevailing heavy-discount promotion logic on existing platforms does not fit the development needs of high-end brands. Many high-end cross-border brands operate through mass-market platform channels and are forced to run frequent discounts, leading to diluted premium positioning and damaged brand value.

3. Directions for platform optimization: First, capitalize on the boom in European air conditioner demand to step up recruitment of Chinese home appliance brands and expand platform category scale. Second, launch independent operation support schemes for high-end cross-border brands, build display and promotion scenarios that fit premium brand positioning, meet high-end brands' needs to maintain price stability and build perceived scarcity, and help them establish high-end brand perception.

Taking Midea's layout in the European market as a case study, this article presents new trends and emerging issues in the new stage of globalization of Chinese home appliance brands, offering high reference value for industrial research. Key insights are as follows:

1. New industry trends: Chinese home appliance companies have completed the transition from OEM export to capital-driven expansion via acquisition, and have now entered a new stage of building own brands and targeting the high-end market. This round of extreme heat in Europe has provided a rare window for Chinese brands to enter the European mass consumer market, and the industry as a whole is at a critical turning point for transformation and upgrading.

2. Newly exposed industrial problems: Leading Chinese globalizing brands generally face three categories of issues. First, they prioritize acquisition over integration in overseas expansion: the brands, technologies, and channels purchased at great cost fail to form synergies with the existing system and cannot deliver the expected value. Second, high-end brands face strategic ambiguity: they want high-end profit margins but are unwilling to give up the scale advantage of existing mass-market channels, so they sell premium products using value-oriented tactics, leading to diluted positioning. Third, many pursue unfocused broad expansion across multiple markets, failing to penetrate core markets and build solid brand perception.

3. Research insights: This article proposes two new strategic directions: "replacing scattered expansion with focused market penetration" and "replacing dependence on existing channels with independent operation for high-end brands", providing new analytical frameworks for research on the business models and strategic choices of Chinese companies during globalization upgrading.

德国东部气温飙到41.7℃,连续刷新气象纪录;

英国萨福克郡测得37.3℃,创下有记录以来六月最高气温;

德国规定夜间空调噪音需要小于35分贝,PortaSplit日常运行噪音就是35分贝;

法国规定空调制冷剂超过2kg就需要专人年检,PortaSplit预充制冷剂1.99kg;
