Quick Summary

This article explores the new wave of growth opportunities for cross-border e-commerce independent stores in the AI era, and shares actionable insights for general readers looking to enter the space:

1. AI has drastically lowered the barrier to entry for independent stores. In the early days, building an independent store required custom coding; later, SaaS platforms simplified site building but left operational hurdles high. Today, AI tools cover the full workflow, from site building and copy generation to marketing and operational decision-making, enabling even small teams or solo founders to launch a business.

2. Independent stores are currently seeing clear AI-driven traffic dividends. Conversion from AI search channels is twice that of general AI search, and data from leading platforms shows year-over-year order growth of 1300% from AI channels. AI channels still account for a tiny share of total GMV, leaving enormous room for growth.

3. Ordinary merchants do not need to develop AI capabilities in-house. By leveraging the AI infrastructure built into mainstream SaaS platforms, they can connect to leading AI models like ChatGPT with one click to capture new traffic at very low cost.

The AI wave has triggered a revaluation of cross-border e-commerce independent stores, creating multi-layered new opportunities for DTC brands aligned with brands' core priorities of channel expansion, brand building, and tapping into new consumer trends. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Consumer discovery has shifted: Consumers are increasingly finding products through AI conversational interfaces, rather than traditional search engines or third-party e-commerce platforms. "Agentic commerce" – where AI agents shop on behalf of consumers – has emerged as a clear new consumer trend.

2. AI creates new advantages for brand building: AI systems prioritize content from independent brand sites when gathering information. Since brands fully own their content assets on independent sites, brand stories, product descriptions and other messaging can be accurately cited by AI, helping brands deliver consistent messaging and capture user mindshare in the AI era.

3. The incremental growth opportunity is clear: Leading SaaS platforms already enable brands to connect to major AI platforms with one click. Public data shows AI channel conversion grew 53.9% year-over-year, but AI channels still account for just 0.068% of total GMV, leaving enormous room for future growth. AI also helps brands cut operational costs and improve efficiency.

AI has unlocked a new wave of growth dividends for cross-border independent stores. Below is a summary of actionable insights on opportunities, risks, and next steps tailored for sellers:

1. The new AI traffic dividend is well-documented: Conversational AI has become a new shopping entry point, with industry data showing extremely strong performance. Shopify reports 8x year-over-year growth in AI-driven traffic, and roughly 13x year-over-year growth in AI search-derived orders. SHOPLINE data shows 775% year-over-year growth in AI channel visitors and 53.9% growth in conversion. AI channels currently hold a very small share of total GMV, meaning this is an early-stage dividend with plenty of growth headroom.

2. Entry and operational barriers have been drastically cut: New generation AI-native e-commerce systems have reduced independent store operational barriers to nearly zero. AI can automatically complete site building, product listing, marketing copy generation, ad buying, and operational decision-making, and even generate custom applications. Small and medium-sized sellers can launch operations without hiring a large in-house team, and can also connect to external mainstream AI tools to meet customized needs.

3. Risk and opportunity note: This wave of AI development will trigger industry-wide consolidation. Both large sellers and small teams are starting from the same starting line, and early positioning in AI channels will let players capture this new round of growth.

New developments in AI-era cross-border independent stores have created fresh opportunities for Chinese factories looking to go global and transform, aligned with factories' priorities of business opportunities and digital transformation. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. The barrier to DTC transformation has been drastically lowered: Many factories have long sought to launch their own branded DTC independent stores, but were previously held back by limited site building and operational capabilities. Today, AI has cut site building and operational barriers drastically. Factories do not need a professional cross-border operations team to build their own independent store leveraging the AI capabilities of SaaS platforms.

2. Independent stores enable access to low-cost new AI-driven traffic: In the AI era, independent brand sites are high-priority information sources for AI systems. Product and brand content on a factory's independent site is far more likely to be crawled and recommended by AI. Compared with selling on third-party platforms, independent stores let factories capture AI-driven incremental growth at lower cost, while building their own private domain traffic.

3. Insights for digital transformation: Factories do not need to build e-commerce digital systems from scratch. They can directly leverage the AI infrastructure of mature SaaS platforms to access full-stack AI capabilities from site building to customer acquisition to operations. Even small factories can test DTC brand expansion at low cost, upgrade their existing business model, and reduce dependence on third-party channels.

The AI wave has created clear new industry trends in the cross-border independent store space, aligned with service providers' focus on industry trends, customer pain points, and solution directions. Key insights are as follows:

1. The industry development trajectory is clear: AI will be the core variable shaping cross-border e-commerce over the next five to ten years. The entire independent store SaaS industry is transitioning from traditional e-commerce SaaS to AI-native operating systems. Agentic commerce – AI that shops on consumers' behalf – has emerged as the next frontier for e-commerce, and the entire industry is rebuilding its underlying architecture to adapt to AI.

2. Core customer pain points are well-defined: After the previous generation of SaaS reduced site building barriers, merchants' core pain points have shifted to high operational costs and high customer acquisition costs. In this new trend, merchants broadly need solutions that enable access to new AI traffic and full-stack AI-powered operations to cut costs and capture the AI dividend.

3. Reference solution pathways: Leading players have already mapped out a clear path: First, build agentic storefronts with structured product databases compatible with universal commerce protocols, to help merchants connect to major AI conversational platforms for traffic and unify cross-channel order management. Second, build a full-stack AI tool matrix, evolving AI from a passive response assistant to an active decision-making partner. Third, maintain an open ecosystem that allows merchants to connect to external mainstream AI tools to meet customized needs.

In the AI era, merchant demand for independent store platforms has changed significantly, and the practices of leading players offer clear reference points for platform providers. Key insights are as follows:

1. The market has new demands for platforms: In the previous era, merchants only needed platforms for site building. Today, beyond site building, merchants need platforms to help them access new AI traffic entry points, and require full-stack AI capabilities to lower operational barriers and capture the AI dividend. This creates a new growth engine for platforms.

2. Latest actionable practices from leading platforms: Leading SaaS platforms have already rolled out three core AI-focused initiatives: First, launch agentic storefronts with structured product databases compatible with universal commerce protocols, enabling merchants' products to be crawled by major AI platforms. Merchants can configure once to sell across multiple AI platforms, with unified order management and attribution. Second, upgrade AI tools, evolving AI from passive chatbots to decision-making partners that can actively push operational recommendations and automatically execute tasks across all operational scenarios. Third, open up the ecosystem, launching an AI tool kit that allows merchants to connect to external mainstream AI tools to enrich the platform ecosystem.

3. Key directional note: Platforms cannot just add superficial AI features; they must rebuild from the underlying architecture to build a true AI-native system. AI channels are still in an early stage of development, and early positioning will secure access to the next round of industry growth.

This article outlines the latest industry developments in the cross-border e-commerce independent store track in the AI era. The entire sector is undergoing a value revaluation and seeing a range of new changes. Key insights are as follows:

1. New industry developments: The cross-border independent store industry has gone through three phases. From 2020 to 2022, it was a boom period: SaaS platforms lowered site building barriers and the sector grew rapidly. After 2023, the industry cooled amid high operational barriers and competition from third-party platforms. Today, advances in AI technology have driven a new round of industry growth, with all major global independent store SaaS platforms transitioning to AI-native e-commerce operating systems and collectively betting on the new agentic commerce track.

2. New changes to business models: The core value of the new generation SaaS platforms has evolved from helping merchants build stores to helping merchants get discovered by AI and complete transactions, while reducing operational barriers to nearly zero. This new business model has already proven effective: Shopify hit $100 billion in Q1 GMV, with incremental growth driven primarily by its AI investments, and its core revenue metrics also grew.

3. New direction for the industry: AI has delivered technological democratization, with traffic entry points shifting from traditional platforms to AI conversational interfaces. The entire industry will see a major reshuffle, with both large incumbents and small new entrants starting from the same starting line. The industry is still in an early stage of development, and its final form has not yet been determined. However, rebuilding the ecosystem from the ground up around AI has already become industry consensus.

这背后由三个环节来支撑:Shopify Catalog(即Shopify商品库)、UCP(Universal Commerce Protocol,通用商务协议)和统一管理后台。

反映在Shopify自身业绩上,更多商家入局、更多商家活跃起来,自然带动了其MRR(月度经常性收入,SaaS订阅制企业的核心收入指标,衡量每月可预测的重复性收入)等核心指标的上涨。
