Quick Summary

Summary: This article examines the competition between Pepsi's prebiotic cola and Coca-Cola. For general readers, the key points are what has actually changed in the new products, the health facts, and whether they are worth buying.

1. Pepsi launched its prebiotic cola in July, adding polydextrose. It contains 4.5g of sugar per 100ml, down from 7g in the regular version, but each can still contains about 15g—more than half the recommended daily intake of 25g. Prebiotics are not probiotics; they are simply dietary fiber, and there is no need to supplement them through cola when eating a balanced diet.

2. The new product is notably more expensive: a 12-can pack of 330ml sells for RMB 47.9, while a regular 20-can pack sells for RMB 40.9, making the per-can price roughly double. The added cost is actually only about RMB 0.16–0.24 per can, leaving substantial room for brand premium.

3. In-store cooler placement and distribution vary widely: Coca-Cola's prebiotic products are mostly already in prime cooler positions, while Pepsi's new product is unavailable in many convenience stores. It is fine to try it, but do not treat it as a health supplement.

Summary: For brand owners, the article offers a case study of Pepsi and Coca-Cola's marketing, pricing, channel, and competitive strategies in launching healthier colas.

1. Healthier products are now the main innovation theme in cola: after zero sugar, the two giants are adding prebiotics to reinforce health claims. Consumers are willing to try light-health concepts, but they are generally rational and see prebiotic cola more as a gimmick or a "tax on IQ." Brands need to avoid overstating benefits.

2. The pricing-cost relationship is instructive: prebiotics add only about RMB 0.16–0.24 per can in cost, yet the retail price can be nearly double that of regular cola. The health label provides strong pricing power; whether the premium lasts depends on brand marketing and channel capability.

3. First movers and followers have different playbooks: marketing expert Yan Jiu notes that Coca-Cola entered first and bore the burden of educating the market, while Pepsi is using differentiation—polydextrose dosage, "cutting richness after a big meal," and fitness scenarios—to win impulse buyers. Pepsi can also leverage its snack portfolio to create synergies around meals and social occasions.

4. Coolers are critical to functional cola sell-through: Coca-Cola has more than 1.3 million coolers, clearly ahead of Pepsi. The number of coolers and replenishment frequency determine whether new products are seen, available, and sampled.

Summary: For sellers, the core takeaways are the product-selection and sell-through opportunities created by the health trend in carbonated drinks, along with the risks behind new-product distribution.

1. Market growth is shifting to zero-sugar and healthier products: in the first half of 2026, all domestic carbonated drink growth came from zero-sugar products, while the overall traditional carbonated category declined and offline sales of sugary cola fell year on year. Sellers should prioritize new cola products with health labels and a fresh concept, but should not ignore category contraction risk.

2. Prebiotic cola is a differentiation opportunity: Pepsi launched in July and Coca-Cola in February, at similar price points that are higher than regular cola, offering relatively better margins. However, consumer awareness of prebiotics is limited, so stores need to actively explain the products or use supporting materials; otherwise they may be dismissed as a gimmick.

3. Channel endpoints determine whether new products sell: chilled cola moves faster, and cooler display and replenishment frequency directly affect conversion. Pepsi's new product has not yet reached many convenience stores, while Coca-Cola is already in prime cooler positions. Before taking on a new product, sellers should confirm distributors' service capabilities and cooler resources.

4. Lessons to learn: brands launch products through social media announcements, partnerships with probiotic brands, and scenario-based positioning. Sellers can bundle snacks with drinks to increase attach rates.

Summary: For factories, the article highlights the contract-manufacturing cost range, formulation choices, and product-upgrade directions in healthier beverages.

1. The cost estimates are worth noting: beverage contract manufacturers say the cost of adding prebiotics depends on the category, purchase volume, and timing. At Pepsi's per-can dosage, the cost rises by about RMB 0.16–0.24 per can; using the cheapest raw materials would add only about RMB 0.02 per bottle.

2. On formulation, Pepsi uses polydextrose and Coca-Cola uses resistant dextrin. Both are common prebiotics with no clear advantage either way; different prebiotic types have little impact on taste, so factories can choose flexibly with brand owners based on target price.

3. Adding prebiotics gives a product a health label and a decent premium range. This means contract manufacturers should not compete only on raw-material cost; they can also provide value-added services such as labeling, testing, and claim-compliance support.

4. On the channel side, chilling and immediate consumption determine sell-through for new cola products. Factories can watch demand for small pack sizes, e-commerce direct shipping, and convenience-store replenishment, and support brands with rapid distribution and restocking.

Summary: For service providers, the article reveals trends in the healthier-cola space, clients' pain points in consumer education and channel reach, and potential service opportunities.

1. Industry trend: overall growth in carbonated drinks is slowing. China's market size fell 2.6% year on year in 2025, and in the first half of 2026 all growth came from zero-sugar products. Cola giants are developing light-health products with ingredients such as prebiotics, making health a clear direction.

2. Client pain points: consumers often cannot distinguish prebiotics from probiotics, and most view prebiotic cola as a gimmick or a "tax on IQ." Brands need content-based education, benefit messaging, and scenario-based education, while avoiding exaggerated claims and addressing concerns about excessive sugar.

3. Channel pain points: new-product sell-through depends heavily on cold cooler display and immediate-purchase conversion. Coca-Cola has more than 1.3 million coolers, while Pepsi has only 230,000, a clear gap in replenishment frequency at retail. Service providers can offer terminal display management, distributor coordination, digital store audits, and replenishment-alert solutions.

4. Data opportunity: offline retail monitoring shows Coca-Cola at a 60.94% share and Pepsi at 28.75%, along with year-on-year offline sales data. This can support competitor tracking, regional product selection, and channel strategy, enabling data products for brands.

Summary: For platform operators, the article points to opportunities in merchant acquisition, content operations, and compliance management created by the health trend in carbonated drinks.

1. Online channels are already a key venue for new-product buzz and sales: Pepsi announced through social media and partnered with probiotic brands; consumers discuss the products on Xiaohongshu, and Douyin allows direct price comparison and transactions. Platforms can create special pages, livestreams, and topic campaigns around light-health cola to attract brands.

2. Price competition needs management: on Douyin, prebiotic cola sells at RMB 47.9 for 12 cans, while regular cola sells at RMB 40.9 for 20 cans, a clear health-version premium. Platforms can support launches, gift promotions, and price-comparison tools to help brands build price competitiveness and gain initial traction.

3. Content compliance is a risk: consumers are confused about prebiotics, with some thinking they are probiotics and others calling the products a gimmick. Platforms need review rules for health claims to prevent brands from exaggerating prebiotic benefits and triggering public-opinion or regulatory risk.

4. Data can support operations: carbonated drink growth comes from zero-sugar products, and labels such as low-sugar and prebiotic are gaining traction. Platforms can develop trend rankings and ingredient-analysis tools to help merchants select products. They should also remind merchants not to overstock because of declines in existing categories.

Summary: For researchers, the key issues are the product-innovation mechanism behind healthier cola, the duopoly competition pattern, category life cycle, and new questions raised by food health claims.

1. New industry development: after sugar reduction and zero sugar, prebiotics have become a new ingredient for cola to add health labels. Pepsi uses polydextrose and Coca-Cola uses resistant dextrin; both are common prebiotics. Yet a can still contains about 15g of sugar—more than half the 25g daily recommended intake—so "healthy" is more about relative sugar reduction than absolute health.

2. Business model: Pepsi and Coca-Cola display a duopoly understanding in which the first mover educates the market and the follower reaps the benefits. The first mover bears the risk of popularizing the concept, while the follower uses scale and channels to capture the market. Pepsi also has both snacks and beverages, giving it scenario-combination capabilities and making it a case of diversification synergy within a food group.

3. Competition and channel issues: the gap in cooler terminal counts determines new-product reach and sell-through—Coca-Cola has more than 1.3 million coolers versus Pepsi's 230,000. In traditional offline carbonated drinks, Coca-Cola holds a 60.94% share versus Pepsi's 28.75%, yet PepsiCo's overall revenue is larger, showing that business structure affects the allocation of competitive resources.

4. Policy and regulatory implications: consumers widely confuse prebiotics with probiotics and view the new products as a gimmick. The article suggests a need to strengthen public knowledge about health claims on packaged foods, label management, and sugar-content disclosure, and to prevent functional ingredients from being abused as marketing gimmicks.
