Quick Summary

This article summarizes the current state of China's extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) industry, which has shifted from rapid growth to a sudden decline, and provides guidance for general consumers choosing between EREVs and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Current industry status: After five years of rapid expansion, wholesale EREV sales in the first half of 2026 dropped 13.1% year-over-year, with a 25.2% plunge in June alone. EREVs are the only one of China's three major new energy vehicle technology tracks to register a decline, marking the end of its golden age.

2. Core reasons for the slowdown: Longer BEV driving ranges, widespread adoption of fast charging, and expanded charging infrastructure have resolved range anxiety for most consumers. Falling battery prices have eliminated the price gap between similarly sized BEVs and EREVs, and EREVs have higher maintenance costs, undermining the long-held claim that "EREVs are cheaper to own." Additionally, the EREV exemption from vehicle and vessel taxes will be lifted starting in 2027, removing a key policy incentive.

3. Guidance for car buyers: EREVs remain a solid choice for MPV users who regularly travel long distances with full loads, mid-to-large SUV users who take occasional long trips, consumers in regions with limited charging infrastructure, and drivers in cold climates. For all other use cases, BEVs are the more cost-effective option.

This article analyzes EREV market trends and shifting consumer demand to provide clear guidance for automakers on product strategy and marketing. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Shifting consumer trends: The overall EREV market is contracting, and EREV market share in the low-price small car segment continues to decline. Stable demand only exists for mid-to-large vehicles, MPVs, and in regions with low charging density and cold climates. EREVs are no longer a one-size-fits-all optimal solution for all market segments.

2. Product development direction: The current mainstream offering is the "super EREV" configuration: a large battery pack paired with fast charging, designed for consumers to drive as a BEV for daily use, with the gas engine as a backup for long trips or when charging is unavailable. This aligns with the actual needs of mid-to-large vehicle buyers. However, brands should note that this configuration adds roughly 10,000 yuan to the BOM cost compared to a BEV with the same range, making it impossible to profitably market this configuration below the 200,000 yuan price point. Low-cost EREVs have no viable profit margin.

3. Competitive outlook: The mid-to-large EREV market is already dominated by Li Auto and AITO, which have strong established brand positioning with consumers. New entrants will face overcapacity and intense competition in a saturated market, and will need to build clear differentiated advantages to break through.

This article summarizes the latest policy updates and demand shifts in the EREV market, and outlines current risks and opportunities for sellers. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Risk warnings: Overall EREV market demand is contracting, and new supply is set to double year-over-year in 2026, pushing the market into a period of fierce cutthroat competition in a saturated market. Consumers' willingness to pay a premium for an extended-range powertrain continues to fall, and EREVs priced below 200,000 yuan are rarely profitable and at high risk of inventory buildup. Starting in 2027, EREVs will lose their exemption from vehicle and vessel taxes, which will directly impact consumer purchase decisions, requiring sellers to prepare in advance.

2. Opportunity outlook: Three niche segments still hold stable demand: MPVs for long-distance travel with full loads, mid-to-large SUVs for long-distance trips, and markets in low-charging-density counties in northwest and southwest China, as well as cold northern regions. Sellers can focus on these niche vehicle segments to capture growth.

3. Recommended strategy: Sellers should adjust promotion strategies for these targeted segments, highlighting EREVs' core value as a "backup power option" that matches the key pain points of target users, and avoid blindly promoting general-purpose EREVs in mass-market price points.

This article analyzes shifting product demand in the EREV market to provide guidance for manufacturers on capacity planning and product design. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Guidance for capacity and product planning: EREV demand is increasingly concentrated in large-size vehicles, while EREV market share in the low-cost small car segment continues to decline. Manufacturers should reduce capacity allocation for low-cost small EREVs, and increase capacity reserves for mid-to-large MPV and SUV EREVs.

2. Product design requirements: Today's consumers expect to use EREVs as BEVs for daily driving, so product designs should shift to the large-battery + fast-charging configuration. Large-capacity batteries compatible with fast charging meet daily pure electric driving needs, while retaining the gas engine as a backup.

3. Cost control requirements: A complete extended-range system adds 15,000 to 25,000 yuan to BOM costs compared to a BEV, and a super EREV with a large battery has an even higher total cost than a BEV with the same range. Factories need to optimize their supply chains and reduce production costs for extended-range systems to maintain healthy profit margins and avoid cost erosion.

4. Commercial opportunities: Developing purpose-built EREVs for consumers in low-charging-density regions and cold climates still offers stable room for growth.

This article outlines EREV industry trends and uncovers current consumer pain points to provide strategic guidance for automotive service providers. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Industry trends: The overall EREV market is in steady decline, and its future market size will continue to shrink as BEV charging infrastructure expands. BEVs are the undisputed mainstream of the future, so service providers should gradually shift more service resources to BEV-focused offerings.

2. Core customer pain points: EREV owners have both a pure electric powertrain and a gas-powered system, so they need both charging services and regular maintenance for engine and other fuel components. This creates more maintenance requirements and higher overall maintenance costs than BEVs. Both EREV and BEV users in low-charging-density regions still face the pain point of insufficient charging access.

3. New business opportunities: For existing EREV owners, service providers can launch bundled packages that cover both fuel system maintenance and charging services to capture maintenance profits from the installed base. In low-charging-density regions, accelerating the deployment of fast charging stations can meet the needs of both BEV and EREV users, and still offers substantial room for growth.

This article analyzes the latest shifts in the EREV market to provide guidance for automotive platform operators on operations, dealer recruitment, and risk mitigation. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Shifting user and market demand: Overall EREV demand is declining, with stable demand limited to mid-to-large vehicles, MPVs, and low-charging-density regions. Demand varies dramatically across regions and use cases. Platform operators should adjust their recommendation algorithms to push matched vehicle models based on region and user profile to improve conversion rates.

2. Guidance for dealer recruitment: Leading automakers still retain EREV product lines, and new players such as Xiaomi have entered the mid-to-large EREV segment. Niche EREV segments still generate traffic opportunities. Platforms can prioritize large-size differentiated new EREV models from leading brands to build out their niche segment offerings.

3. Risk mitigation: The overall EREV market is facing contracting demand and oversupply. Low-cost mass-market EREVs carry high inventory risk. Platforms should not blindly allocate traffic and operational resources to these models to avoid operational losses from falling demand. They should also monitor how policy changes impact consumer decisions and adjust operational strategies proactively.

This article tracks the full trajectory of the EREV technology track from its explosive growth to its current slowdown, identifies new industry trends and core challenges, and provides rich first-hand insights for industry research. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. New industry trends: EREV technology grew rapidly from 2021 to 2025, with a peak year-over-year growth rate of 218%. In 2025, the market reached 1.235 million units, accounting for over 10% of China's total new energy vehicle market. Starting in 2026, the market turned downward, making EREVs the only declining segment among China's three major new energy vehicle technology tracks. The golden age of EREVs as a mass-market one-size-fits-all solution is officially over, and the technology now only survives in the large-size vehicle niche.

2. Core emerging challenges: The current industry-promoted "super EREV" model (large battery + fast charging) inherently erodes the core value of EREV technology: the gas engine is reduced to a psychological safety net, while the overall cost is higher than an equivalent BEV. Combined with falling consumer willingness to pay and the elimination of policy incentives, EREVs' living space continues to be squeezed.

3. Research implications: The rise and fall of EREVs clearly demonstrates the impact of technology competition, industrial policy, and charging infrastructure buildout on the new energy vehicle industry. EREVs will gradually become a niche category going forward, and the length of its transition period will depend on how quickly charging infrastructure expands to underserved regions and changes in consumer willingness to pay. This trajectory offers high value for research on the development laws of the new energy industry.
