Quick Summary

This article explores Kouzi Liquor, a regional Chinese liquor brand, and its viral marketing attempt that mirrors the strategy of Mixue Ice City, a leading Chinese bubble tea chain. It breaks down the brand’s current growth challenges and transition hurdles with the following key takeaways:

1. Core Campaign: Kouzi Liquor adapted a local folk saying to release a song titled *Even a Sparrow Drinks Two Liang*, and launched two low-alcohol small-batch liquors of different sizes under the same name. The campaign targets the everyday emotional needs of working-class people, copying Mixue Ice City’s successful formula of "audio viral penetration + UGC fission + product to convert traffic".

2. Existing Weaknesses: The campaign suffers from weak brand association between the song and Kouzi Liquor, and attracts mostly low-intent general traffic. Additionally, the brand’s established distribution system via large regional distributors is ill-equipped to convert online traffic. The new small liquor line has not yet launched publicly, so its actual performance remains unproven.

3. Broader Growth Crisis: Despite spending over 100 million RMB on consulting services, Kouzi Liquor has failed to hit its 10 billion RMB annual revenue target. Its aging large-distributor business model has become a major barrier to transformation. Past attempts to appeal to younger consumers have not developed into a systematic strategy, and the brand is already facing stalled growth.

This article uses Kouzi Liquor’s youth-oriented transformation attempt as a case study to summarize key lessons for regional Chinese liquor brands, with the following key insights:

1. Shifting Industry Consumer Trends: Liquor marketing has moved past traditional grand, premium-focused narratives. Young consumers now crave emotional connection and engaging, fun content. Consumption scenarios have shifted from heavy business banquets to everyday solo drinking and casual gatherings with friends, making low-alcohol small-format liquor a key tool for brands looking to capture the young consumer market.

2. Actionable Marketing Framework: Brands can adopt the model of "viral music to trigger UGC fission + product to convert traffic". Anchor to mass consumers, spark resonance with relatable, everyday content, and align with the communication logic of the current mass consumption era.

3. Common Pitfalls to Avoid: Strengthen the connection between campaign content and your core brand to avoid low conversion from untargeted general traffic. Brands must also adjust their distribution systems in lockstep: once-successful business models can easily become a barrier to transformation. Only when marketing, product and distribution work in tandem can traffic be converted into actual sales, avoiding the pitfall of high investment with low returns.

This article analyzes shifts and opportunities in China’s current liquor market, offering opportunity and risk alerts for liquor sellers with the following takeaways:

1. Untapped Market Opportunities: The small-format liquor segment has grown sharply in recent years. Young consumers increasingly use small liquors for mixing with iced drinks or soft sodas. Placing small liquors in high-traffic prime locations such as checkout counters and main aisles, and displaying them alongside mixers like sparkling water, can boost overall gross margins, drive cross-sales of beverages and snacks, and increase average order value. On instant retail platforms, sellers can bundle pre-built cocktail kits to leverage 30-minute delivery and amplify growth.

2. Broader Industry Shifts: Leading liquor brands across the board are now entering the small-format liquor space to capture young consumers, and marketing logic has shifted to two-way interaction with consumers centered on emotional resonance. Sellers can capture new growth by partnering with liquor brands to enter this high-potential segment.

3. Key Risk Warnings: Standalone traffic-driven marketing cannot deliver conversions. Offline shelf placement and distribution push are required to turn social buzz into sales. Offering only small-format, low-alcohol products is not enough to win over young consumers; consistent brand building is required to drive stable repeat purchases.

This article outlines shifting demand on China’s liquor consumption end, providing directional guidance for liquor manufacturing facilities navigating transformation, with the following key insights:

1. New Product Design Requirements: Liquor consumption scenarios have evolved. Beyond traditional business banquets, demand for lightweight everyday use has grown, including late-night solo drinking, casual gatherings with friends, and at-home custom mixing. Consumers now favor small-format, low-alcohol products, so factories should adjust their product lines to meet these new demands.

2. New Commercial Opportunities: The small-format liquor segment is now in a high-growth phase. Retail terminals are willing to allocate prime shelf space to small liquors, leading brands are entering the market en masse, and consumer education has been largely completed. Factories can capitalize on this trend to launch small-format liquor products tailored to new scenarios, and access new growth by tapping into instant retail and other emerging channels.

3. Transformation Takeaways: Under the traditional large-distributor model, factories cannot directly access terminal consumer data, leading to delayed market feedback. To capture shifting consumer trends in a timely manner and adjust product strategies quickly, factories must advance distribution reform and digital transformation to strengthen their control over channels and consumer data.

This article outlines the pain points and industry trends of regional Chinese liquor brands’ transformation, offering key insights for service providers serving the liquor industry:

1. Current Industry Development Trends: The liquor industry has entered an era of refined competition. Amid growing consumption segmentation, a large number of established regional liquor brands need to tap into the mass consumer market and complete youth-oriented brand transformation. Marketing has shifted from one-way brand communication to two-way interaction with consumers centered on emotional resonance.

2. Core Client Pain Points: Most regional liquor brands are constrained by their traditional large-distributor system. Manufacturers have weak control over distribution channels, struggle to capture consumer demand accurately, and face delayed market feedback. Most transformation attempts only stop at surface-level marketing, with no adjustments to underlying distribution and product systems, leading to high marketing spend, low conversion efficiency, and little to no growth improvement.

3. Direction for Solution Design: When developing transformation plans for regional liquor brands, service providers should not only deliver surface-level marketing strategy. They need to account for the brand’s existing channel landscape, push for reform of the underlying channel structure, and help brands build a systematic transformation plan that aligns marketing, product and distribution. This includes strengthening the connection between campaign content and the core brand to improve traffic conversion efficiency.

This article analyzes the transformation needs of liquor brands and new consumer demand, offering key insights for the operation and merchant recruitment of alcohol-related platforms:

1. New Consumer-side Demand: The small-format liquor segment is growing rapidly, with young consumers demanding instant access for mixing and everyday casual drinking. Platforms can adjust operational strategies to match this demand: optimize placement for small liquors, and offer bundle deals with sparkling water and mixing tools to meet consumer mixing needs while boosting overall platform gross margins and average order value.

2. New Demand from Liquor Brands: Traditional regional liquor brands are now prioritizing direct-to-consumer e-commerce channels, and need support to convert online traffic into sales. They have substantial unmet demand for online operation and traffic conversion services. Platforms can develop targeted operation support programs to attract more liquor brands to set up flagship stores on their platforms.

3. Direction for Operation Optimization: Platforms can develop standardized cocktail kits for small-format liquors, leveraging instant delivery to meet consumers’ need for same-hour mixing. They can also help liquor brands optimize live-streaming creative assets to improve live conversion, helping brands grow their direct sales revenue while expanding the platform’s own top-line revenue.

This paper uses the transformation practice of Kouzi Liquor, a leading regional Chinese liquor brand, as a case study to present the real status quo of transformation among China’s regional liquor enterprises, offering key insights for industry researchers:

1. New Industry Trends: The Chinese liquor industry has entered a phase of consumption segmentation. Leading brands across the board are launching small-format liquor products to capture the young mass market, and a new business model of "viral song penetration + UGC fission + product conversion" has emerged in marketing. The industry as a whole has shifted from traditional grand premium narratives to mass-oriented emotional marketing.

2. Unresolved Industry-wide Problems: Established regional liquor brands generally suffer from path dependency. The large-distributor channel model that drove their early success has now become a barrier to transformation, leading to weak channel control, delayed market feedback, and stalled national expansion. Most brands only pursue conservative incremental transformation rather than sweeping overhaul, resulting in high marketing spend, low conversion efficiency, and stalled growth across the segment.

3. Research Takeaways: For regional liquor brands to navigate the current industry cycle, learning only surface-level marketing tactics cannot solve fundamental problems. They must restructure their underlying channel architecture and build product matrices tailored to new consumer demand, to turn short-term social traffic into long-term stable user assets and achieve sustained growth breakthrough.

首先,渠道层次过多,企业对渠道的掌控力弱,经销商更愿意优先推成熟产品,导致口子窖高端化滞后;

其次,大商主导的渠道体系缺乏数据闭环,口子窖难以精准捕捉消费趋势变化,市场反馈滞后;
