Quick Summary

This article aggregates real user experiences with the Nintendo Switch 2 after one year of use, providing clear reference information for general consumers planning to purchase the device.

1. Core product overview: The Switch 2 delivers significant performance and visual upgrades over the original model. It sold over 3.5 million units globally within four days of launch, reaching nearly 19.86 million units cumulative sales by March 2026 and recently exceeding 20 million units, showing strong market acceptance. However, it has notable drawbacks: battery life drops sharply, delivering only around 2 hours of gameplay for *The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom*, far less than the 5 hours offered by the original OLED Switch. Weighing 543 grams, the device is bulky and causes arm fatigue during extended play, hurting portability. It also lacks a large library of first-party exclusive titles, and third-party games arrive later, cost more and offer worse visual quality than on competing platforms. Meanwhile, its price has risen from the original Switch's $300 to $450, with additional price hikes implemented.

2. Purchase guidance: Core Nintendo fans can comfortably buy the device, but consumers purchasing it only for a single casual game should prepare for potential long-term disuse. Users who prioritize handheld play should wait for the launch of the Switch 2 LITE before purchasing.

The Switch 2's market performance and user feedback provide valuable multi-faceted insights for gaming hardware brands.

1. User demand and consumer trends: Game users currently show clear stratified demand. A large share of users prefer lightweight, portable handheld devices over docked TV functionality, and are far more sensitive to weight and ergonomics than raw performance. Non-core users are willing to pay for single casual first-party exclusives that match their preferences, and casual family-friendly games are far more likely to achieve mainstream breakout success.

2. Product R&D and profitability takeaways: The Switch 2 currently loses money on every unit sold, due to high storage costs and outdated chip technology, with profits entirely offset by revenue from original-generation games. This demonstrates that hardware R&D should not focus solely on specs; brands must balance performance, power consumption, cost and user experience. First-party exclusive content remains a brand's core competitive advantage, and hardware launches must be paired with a sufficient library of high-quality exclusive content from day one to guarantee long-term profitability.

3. Technology strategy considerations: While the broader global game industry is widely adopting generative AI to cut costs and improve efficiency, Nintendo has maintained a firm rejection of AI. The long-term impact of this choice on competitiveness remains to be seen, and brands must carefully weigh the tradeoff between technology adoption and product experience.

The Switch 2's current market dynamics deliver clear insights into opportunities and risks for sellers of gaming hardware, games and accessories.

1. Market opportunities: The Switch 2's overall sales growth far outpaces that of the original Switch over the same period, with total sales already exceeding 20 million units, indicating strong overall market demand. A large number of original Switch LITE users have strong upgrade demand, and are waiting for the launch of the Switch 2 LITE and enhanced battery models, which will drive a sales spike when new models launch. The Switch 2's inherent pain points—short battery life and heavy weight—have boosted demand for complementary accessories such as high-capacity portable power banks and lightweight controller mounts. Sellers can build inventory in these categories in advance.

2. Risk warnings: Driven by rising storage prices and chip shortages, Nintendo will significantly delay the launch of new Switch 2 models. Sellers should avoid bulk pre-stocking to prevent tying up working capital. Given the limited library of first-party blockbusters and weak competitiveness of third-party games, sellers should prioritize stocking Nintendo first-party titles and casual exclusive games, while reducing inventory of third-party blockbusters.

User feedback and industry dynamics surrounding the Switch 2 offer many insights and business opportunities for game hardware foundries and component suppliers.

1. Product design and manufacturing requirements: Users place extremely high demands on handheld device ergonomics, battery life and portability. When supporting brands in product R&D, foundries should not focus solely on performance scaling; they must prioritize weight control and power optimization early in development, to balance performance upgrades with core user experience.

2. Business opportunities: Nintendo is currently under pressure from rising storage costs and has delayed new Switch 2 model launches. Foundries can develop tailored cost-reduction solutions, optimizing storage and thermal module design to help brands control costs and win more orders. The Switch 2's product shortcomings have created strong demand for third-party accessories. Component factories can develop targeted products such as lightweight controllers, expanded battery packs, and portable charging accessories to tap into this niche market.

3. Transformation insights: The broader game industry is already adopting AI to cut costs and improve efficiency. Factories can also advance digital transformation and AI adoption to optimize production processes, lower costs, and better respond to cost pressure from brand clients.

The Switch 2's current development has exposed multiple pain points across the game industry, and points out clear business directions for game and hardware-related service providers.

1. Industry trends: The new generation of console upgrades is complete, and performance upgrades have opened new market space. AI has become a core industry trend, with most major international game studios already adopting generative AI to cut costs and boost efficiency. Even as industry leader Nintendo currently maintains a firm opposition to AI adoption, there remains huge room for AI penetration into Nintendo's ecosystem in the future.

2. Core client pain points: Brands face ongoing headwinds including rising storage costs, insufficient supply of high-end chips, and long development cycles and high costs for AAA blockbusters. End consumers face usage pain points including insufficient battery life and poor portability for the Switch 2.

3. Solution directions: Storage service providers can develop cost-effective high-capacity storage solutions to help brands lower hardware costs. Game technology service providers can build generative AI solutions tailored to Nintendo's requirements, helping shorten development cycles and cut costs without compromising core creativity and user experience. Digital accessory service providers can develop Switch 2-specific peripherals to address end users' unmet needs.

The Switch 2's market performance and user demand provide valuable insights for operations and merchant recruitment for game platforms and digital e-commerce platforms.

1. User demand insights: Switch 2 users show clear demographic segmentation, with large groups holding specific demand for device models and different accessory needs than original Switch users. Platforms can run segmented operations tailored to these demands, for example by opening pre-order reservation zones for the Switch 2 LITE to capture user demand in advance, and launching dedicated Switch 2 accessory sections to help users find compatible products more easily.

2. Merchant recruitment priorities: Platforms can increase support for accessory merchants that address the Switch 2's pain points, onboarding sellers of portable charging solutions and lightweight controllers to expand product categories. Given the lack of first-party blockbusters for the Switch 2, platforms can expand their offering of Nintendo first-party games to enrich game selection.

3. Risk mitigation: Driven by cost pressure, the launch timing of new Switch 2 models remains uncertain. Platforms should avoid large-scale pre-stocking or excessive pre-launch hype to prevent inventory backlog. The Switch 2 hardware itself is unprofitable, with the majority of revenue coming from game sales. Platforms can prioritize game-related operations to capture higher revenue share.

The one-year market performance of the Switch 2 provides a typical case study for console game industry research, with many noteworthy new trends and open questions.

1. New industry trends: The new generation of console performance upgrades is complete, with sales growth far outpacing the original model's performance over the same period, indicating strong market demand. Rising storage prices and the AI technology revolution have become core variables shaping the current industry landscape. While most leading game developers have embraced generative AI for content development, top console manufacturer Nintendo continues to reject generative AI and pursue a conservative strategy, making it a highly valuable new case for industry research.

2. New industry questions: New generation consoles face a "performance upgrade - power increase - battery/weight tradeoff" product paradox. Under the background of current high storage costs, the traditional "lose money on hardware to drive user acquisition, profit from games" model has seen sharply widening hardware losses, casting doubt on the long-term sustainability of this model. It also remains an open industry question whether a leading manufacturer's full rejection of AI-driven cost cuts will lead to falling development efficiency relative to competitors.

3. Implications for business model research: Traditional console profit models are facing mounting cost pressure, and the industry needs to explore new business models that balance input and output across hardware and content. This provides a new direction for industry research.
