Quick Summary

This article shares the current development status, opportunities and challenges of Nigeria's e-commerce sector, with key takeaways summarized below:

1. Core market data: Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, will reach a population of 236 million by the end of 2024, with an average age of just 17.9 and an urbanization rate of 54%. It ranks among the top countries globally by internet user size. Nigeria's e-commerce is currently growing at an annual rate of 25%, accounting for 8% of national GDP, and is projected to reach a market size of $24.5 billion by 2030, indicating enormous growth potential.

2. Key opportunities and risks: Nigeria's e-commerce attractiveness stems from its young demographic, growing adoption of digital payments, and more transparent online pricing. Mobile commerce dominates the current market. General investors can explore opportunities by entering specialized e-commerce platforms, improving logistics services in major cities, and tapping into underdeveloped markets. At the same time, they need to guard against potential risks including inadequate infrastructure, low consumer trust in online payments, cyber fraud, and insufficient data security.

This article outlines Nigeria's local market characteristics, opportunities and open challenges for brands planning to enter the market, offering high reference value:

1. Consumption and marketing trends: Nigeria has a young demographic, with more than half of its population in the working-age bracket. Online consumption demand is robust, and e-commerce, with its transparent pricing, is more popular among young consumers compared to the opaque pricing of traditional offline markets. Mobile commerce is the core of the market, social media discovery drives strong conversion, and social commerce represents an emerging growth trend.

2. Channel expansion opportunities: While the market is currently dominated by leading platforms including Jumia and Konga, there is still significant room for growth for emerging vertical specialized platforms. Brands can enter underserved tier markets, and partner with local government projects to access policy support.

3. Key risks to note: Local consumers have low trust in online payments, infrastructure is underdeveloped, and data security and fraud issues are common. Brands need to develop targeted solutions in advance before entering the market.

This article summarizes the growth outlook, opportunity directions and risk warnings of Nigeria's e-commerce sector for sellers looking to expand into overseas markets, with strong practical value:

1. Market and policy opportunities: As Africa's most populous country with a young demographic and one of the world's largest internet user bases, Nigeria's e-commerce grows at an annual rate of 25% and accounts for 8% of GDP, with a projected size of $24.5 billion by 2030, making it a high-growth emerging blue ocean market. The local government has launched a cashless policy to incentivize e-commerce development, creating clear policy tailwinds for the sector.

2. Accessible market segments: Sellers can prioritize positioning on vertical specialized e-commerce platforms, deepen penetration in major urban consumer markets, invest to improve last-mile delivery capabilities, tap into currently underserved tier markets, and also participate in government partnership projects related to agricultural e-commerce.

3. Risk warnings: Sellers need to pay early attention to issues including inadequate local infrastructure, low trust in online payments, frequent data security breaches and cyber fraud, and develop corresponding risk response plans in advance.

This article sorts out e-commerce-driven demand, business opportunities and digital transformation insights for manufacturing facilities looking to expand into the African market via Nigeria:

1. Product design and development demand: Nigeria has a young population, high mobile e-commerce penetration, and fast-growing online consumption. It is well-suited for developing cost-effective products adapted to mobile shopping scenarios. Due to transparent online pricing, demand for clearly priced standardized products is far higher than offline, and the rise of social commerce has driven growing demand for fast-moving hit products.

2. Business partnership opportunities: Factories can partner with local emerging e-commerce platforms to enter currently underserved underdeveloped markets, and also collaborate on agricultural e-commerce projects with Nigeria's federal government to expand sales channels for agriculture-related products.

3. Digital and e-commerce transformation insights: Local e-commerce is primarily mobile-driven. Factories can build out direct-to-consumer digital sales channels early to cut out middlemen and capture growth dividends from the emerging market, while adjusting supporting operation plans to adapt to local special requirements for payments and logistics.

This article sorts out industry trends, client pain points and business opportunities for service providers supporting Nigeria's e-commerce sector and China's e-commerce export business to the region:

1. Industry development trends: Nigeria's e-commerce is currently in a period of high growth, with a 25% annual growth rate and projected market size of $24.5 billion by 2030. Social commerce, and AI and data analytics-enabled e-commerce are emerging development directions. The local government is vigorously promoting a cashless policy to support e-commerce development, leaving enormous room for overall industry growth.

2. Core client pain points: Local infrastructure is inadequate, creating a large gap in logistics delivery capacity; consumers have low trust in online payments, and the digital payment system is underdeveloped; data security lacks guarantees, and cyber fraud is common; the market is fragmented, and supply of vertical specialized platforms is insufficient.

3. Business expansion opportunities: Service providers can develop targeted offerings including logistics infrastructure services, solutions to improve payment trust, data security protection services, and vertical e-commerce platform development services. They can also participate in government partnership projects such as local digital parks and agricultural digital skills academies to expand their business scope.

This article sorts out local market demand, viable development paths and risk mitigation directions for platform operators looking to enter the Nigerian market:

1. Market demand and existing landscape: Nigeria's e-commerce has large growth potential. The current market is primarily dominated by leading platforms such as Jumia and Konga, but the overall market still consists mostly of fragmented informal markets. There is clear unmet demand for vertical specialized e-commerce platforms and supporting services for tier markets, as well as unmet demand for efficient logistics delivery in major cities.

2. Viable development strategies for platforms: Platforms can partner with Nigeria's state and federal governments to develop vertical e-commerce platforms, such as agricultural vertical e-commerce platforms, and participate in projects such as digital parks to obtain policy support. They can also leverage the market's mobile-first characteristics to roll out social commerce models and acquire traffic via social media promotions.

3. Risk mitigation directions: Platforms need to solve consumer trust issues around online payments through targeted measures, build comprehensive security systems to counter cyber fraud, and partner to pre-position supporting infrastructure to address local infrastructure gaps and reduce operational risks.

This article provides first-hand industry data and research directions for scholars studying China-Africa e-commerce cooperation and African e-commerce industry development under the Belt and Road Initiative:

1. New industry trends: Nigeria is Africa's e-commerce market with the greatest growth potential, currently growing at 25% per year and projected to reach $24.5 billion in size by 2030. The industry shows new characteristics of mobile-first growth, rising social commerce, and growing integration of AI into operations. Under the "Silk Road E-commerce" cooperation framework, China and Africa are carrying out new cooperation including e-commerce platform development, digital park construction, agricultural digital skills training, and agricultural e-commerce platform development, forming a new government-led development model.

2. New industry challenges: Nigeria's e-commerce development currently faces core constraints including inadequate infrastructure, prominent cybersecurity and fraud issues, low trust in online payments, and market fragmentation, all of which merit in-depth research.

3. Research insights: Researchers can further study e-commerce development paths in emerging markets, innovative business models for China-Africa e-commerce cooperation under the Belt and Road framework, and explore feasible paths for government-led e-commerce development in underdeveloped markets, to provide reference for relevant industrial cooperation policies.

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon everyone!I am Queen Modestus, from the Center for China-Africa Discourse Studies. The previous speaker,Dr.Kang, has already done much elaboration for us.In fact,as he rightly said, when it comes to e-commerce,Africa is a perfect choice for investment.I am going to talk about some of the developments in Nigeria,a very important country in Africa,in terms of e-commerce.For example, why consider Nigeria? Also,What’s the current state of e-commerce in the country? Finally,I will point out some areas where perhaps people would like to invest,in the future.

First, why Nigeria? To address this question, above is a map of Nigeria, which indicates that it is the most populous country in Africa. As we can see,the population of Nigeria is about 233 million.Estimated to reach 236 million by the end of this year,2024,.Interestingly,a large part of the population, roughly 54%,are urban.

Demographically,Nigeria boasts an interesting profile,40%of the population is under 14 years old, while 56%falls within the 15-64 age bracket, which gives an average age of 17.9.Also,according to the global ranking of internet users,Nigeria ranks 7th in internet usage, with China,India,Brazil,Russia, leading the pack, indicating a vast skilled workforce and active users ideal for e-commerce.

With regards to the current trends of e-commerce in Nigeria, between 2010-2012 the country had a 25%CAGR of 25%and currently should be around 12%.We have reasons to believe that by 2030,e-commerce will reach$24.5 billion.

Why is e-commerce becoming very attractive to Nigerians? One reason for this is the is demographic change,I believe that the younger generation,we call them the“Gen Z”are becoming more and more focused on online activities and smartphone usage. In addition, payment methods are becoming more digitized and the ability to make online payment is improving. There is also transparency in pricing, unlike the conventional market. For example,an item that is worth 100 Naira may be priced at 200 Naira so customers would have to haggle it down to hundred Naira, but e-commerce prices are much more transparent which makes it attractive to the younger generation.

With regards to the characteristics of the e-commerce industry in Nigeria,it is mostly mobile-driven.As I just mentioned,Nigeria is also ranked among the top 7 in the world,in terms of internet usage, there’s a rapid growth of e-commerce platforms but yet dominated by informal and fragmented markets, which is still very much cash-based.This is because,so far, there is still a certain lack of trust in terms of online payments,so people are still cautious.

When it comes to e-commerce in Nigeria,Jumia and Konga e-commerce platform are still the leading game changers in the country.Aside from these giants, however, several companies that are also doing quite well.

Looking at some emerging trends in the Nigerian e-commerce landscape,we noticed a rise in social commerce, online stores, and the integration of AI and analytics. Also, the Nigerian government is doing its best to promoting e-commerce in the country through cash-less polices.Hence, some government policies are incentivizing the growth of e-commerce.

As with every aspect of human lives, some of the major challenges of the e-commerce industry in Nigeria are:Firstly is infrastructure, which is also a key issue in Nigeria.Secondly is the issue of security concerns, like data protection, and cybercrime.Thirdly is the issue of cashless payment, which was mentioned earlier, digital payment is still not fully embraced in the country.

Where there are challenges, there are opportunities for improvement, hence there are also numerous opportunities that e-commerce investors can now seize and tap into in Nigeria. That is,they might want to focus more on some specialized e-commerce platforms,or maybe even go into under-served markets.Investing in logistics is also important as it can improve and enhance logistics and distribution services.

We at CECADS,are also playing our part in promoting e-commerce in Nigeria. We are currently working with some state governments in Nigeria to develop some e-commerce platforms,a digital park, and specialized online stores. We will also be working with the federal government of Nigeria to introduce our agricultural-focused digital skills academy which will also boast of dedicated a farm-plate e-commerce platform

These are a landscape of what is happening in Nigeria right now.In the future,we hope to use such innovative technologies to develop and promote e-commerce,not only in Nigeria but also in the whole of Africa.

Thank you all.
