Quick Summary

Overall 1: CATL is transforming from a power-battery supplier into the underlying platform for the new-energy industry, and this is the key thread for understanding the future of new energy.

1. Since 2026, CATL has invested more than RMB 10 billion in the AI large-model company DeepSeek, data-center power supply, nuclear fusion, and other areas, in addition to stakes in automakers including Avatr, Zeekr, IM Motors, and Neta, as well as battery-swapping and eVTOL companies.

2. Robin Zeng has proposed building the four beams and eight pillars of the new-energy era, with batteries being only one pillar and gaps filled through M&A — an approach similar to Nvidia leveraging GPUs to drive the AI industry chain.

Overall 2: A few hard numbers help gauge the trend.

1. In the first half of 2026, investment income reached RMB 6.153 billion, more than doubling year over year; the book value of long-term equity investments stood at RMB 70.255 billion.

2. Global power-battery market share was 40.2%, up 2.2 percentage points year over year; battery system capacity utilization reached 94.86%; global energy-storage market share was 30.4%, ranking first for five consecutive years.

Overall 3: The lithium-rebate program is a useful operational case for ordinary readers.

1. When lithium carbonate was priced as high as RMB 400,000 per ton, CATL settled battery purchases with automakers at RMB 200,000 per ton in exchange for roughly 80% of their purchasing volume over the next three years.

2. This shows that control over upstream resources can be converted into price competitiveness, and that battery pricing remains deeply affected by mineral prices.

Overall 1: The key to brand and channel development is entering product definition earlier than customers.

1. CATL has invested in automakers such as Avatr, BAIC New Energy, Zeekr, IM Motors, Neta, and Chery, formed battery joint ventures with SAIC, GAC, Geely, and Changan, and explored factory-in-factory cooperation with Seres.

2. These capital relationships give the battery supplier access to vehicle R&D, procurement, and production systems, improving selection odds and raising the cost for automakers to switch suppliers.

Overall 2: Brand pricing and price competition can be designed as long-term policies leveraging resource advantages.

1. The lithium-rebate plan is a typical case: when lithium prices are high, CATL settles at RMB 200,000 per ton for lithium carbonate to secure around 80% of an automaker's battery purchases, locking in orders for the next three years.

2. In essence, this uses upstream resource profits to subsidize battery prices, upgrading price wars into structural competition.

Overall 3: Brand marketing and product R&D should follow end-user scenarios.

1. Electrification has expanded from passenger vehicles to two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, ships, eVTOL, and mining machinery; CATL has moved early through investments in Hello's battery-swapping business, a battery-swapping joint venture with Didi, eVTOL company Fengfei Aviation, and autonomous mining company Yikong Zhijia.

2. Robin Zeng personally appeared at contract-signing events and served as a product experience officer for the NIO ES9, signaling a new form of B2B brand trust-building.

Overall 1: Growth markets lie in energy storage and AI-computing power demand.

1. CATL's energy-storage revenue was RMB 62.44 billion in 2025 and RMB 53.261 billion in the first half of 2026, with global market share of 30.4%, first for five consecutive years.

2. By 2030, global data-center power capacity demand is expected to reach 490.7GW, with a supply-demand gap of 268GW; data-center power supply, storage, backup power, and related equipment represent new incremental demand.

Overall 2: A replicable business model is capital-for-orders and ecosystem positioning.

1. CATL invested in Zhongheng Electric to build HVDC power supply for data centers, took a stake in 21Vianet to enter data-center operations, and invested in DeepSeek to lock in AI-computing power demand.

2. This layer-by-layer investment along the electricity consumption chain builds customer stickiness and long-term orders more effectively than simply selling products.

Overall 3: Risk and opportunity notes.

1. Upstream lithium prices have strong cyclical swings, which can shrink mining investment; automakers loudly pursue de-CATL strategies, yet CATL's share is still rising, showing that barriers come from cost, yield, and delivery capability.

2. Sellers seeking partnership opportunities can watch the nearly 10,000 companies indirectly invested by CATL, spanning battery swapping, energy storage, embodied AI, and marine electrification ecosystems.

Overall 1: Product manufacturing must adapt to highly customized demand.

1. Power-battery production lines are asset-heavy and not fully standardized; different vehicle models have different requirements for cell specifications, battery-pack structures, fast charging, and thermal management. CATL enters vehicle R&D and procurement systems earlier by investing in automakers.

2. Different scenarios have their own power requirements, safety standards, and operating environments, so factories need to enter projects early to define next-generation products.

Overall 2: New business opportunities are emerging in new-energy equipment manufacturing.

1. Energy-storage power stations require coordination among generation companies, grid companies, and project developers from design and integration to grid connection. CATL invested in Yongfu and formed joint ventures with State Grid and China Energy Engineering Group to enter power-station construction and operation.

2. Data centers require continuous power supply, power conversion, and backup power; HVDC power supply is becoming a new category; wind, solar, and hydro projects also bring orders to upstream equipment.

Overall 3: Supply-chain integration and capacity delivery are the core lessons for factories.

1. CATL has used self-built, equity participation, joint venture, and acquisition structures to secure resources such as lepidolite, spodumene, copper-cobalt ore, and nickel ore, and has invested in lithium iron phosphate cathode and power-management chip suppliers to keep key materials controllable.

2. Battery system capacity utilization reached 94.86% in the first half of 2026, showing that high yield and stable delivery fill production lines and are the fundamental reasons customers do not switch suppliers.

Overall 1: The industry trend is shifting from point products to industrial platforms.

1. Using batteries as a leverage point, CATL has extended its capabilities into computing power, electricity, and energy infrastructure through investment and M&A, making it increasingly look like Nvidia in the new-energy era.

2. This platform trend requires service providers to offer integrated, cross-link one-stop solutions rather than a single service.

Overall 2: Customer pain points are concentrated in resource cycles, customer lock-in, and power gaps.

1. Upstream mineral prices swing sharply, downstream automakers are trying to reduce dependence on CATL, and AI data centers face insufficient grid power supply.

2. CATL's response is equity plus long-term agreements to stabilize supply chains, capital to bind automakers and operators, and investments in Zhongheng Electric and 21Vianet to fill data-center power and operations capabilities.

Overall 3: A solution worth borrowing is ecosystem investing around core products.

1. CATL has invested in DeepSeek, Galaxy General, and Beta Fusion, embedding batteries and energy services in future scenarios such as AI, embodied AI, and nuclear fusion.

2. Service providers can learn from this capital-for-synergy approach and, based on customer needs and pain points, offer more complete, longer-term cooperation plans.

Overall 1: The platform's latest approach is using capital to bind key nodes in the industry chain.

1. CATL has directly invested in more than 150 companies and indirectly in around 9,900, with long-term equity investment book value of RMB 70.255 billion, covering minerals, materials, automakers, battery swapping, energy storage, and data centers.

2. This mirrors Nvidia's logic in investing in AI cloud providers: support downstream demand, expand the outlet for its own products, and eventually become indispensable infrastructure.

Overall 2: Ecosystem activation can guide ecosystem recruitment and operations management.

1. CATL formed a battery-swapping joint venture with Didi, worked with NIO to promote battery-swapping network sharing, and invested in Hello Robotaxi and Inceptio Technology, bringing more vehicles into the same battery and charging network.

2. By taking stakes in automakers and forming battery joint ventures, CATL embeds its batteries into vehicle R&D and procurement systems, raising switching costs; the lithium-rebate plan uses pricing terms to lock in future purchase proportions.

Overall 3: Platform players need to manage risk diversification and trend avoidance.

1. Facing automakers' de-CATL rhetoric, CATL diversifies risk through energy storage, hydropower, nuclear power, and AI-computing investments rather than relying solely on power batteries.

2. Its capacity utilization of 94.86% and 40.2% global power-battery share show that lasting platform strength is built on cost, performance, yield, and delivery.

Overall 1: The new industry trend is a battery giant upgrading into a new-energy infrastructure platform.

1. CATL has made cross-sector investments in AI models, data centers, hydropower, and nuclear fusion, with energy storage becoming a second growth curve; outside power batteries, it is building an industrial map covering power generation, storage, and consumption.

2. With more than 150 direct investments and nearly 10,000 indirect investments, the boundaries of the industry are being reshaped by capital.

Overall 2: In business model terms, CATL and Nvidia form a comparable template.

1. Nvidia uses GPUs as a fulcrum to invest in model, cloud-computing, and application companies; CATL uses batteries as a fulcrum to invest in automakers, battery swapping, energy storage, and data centers, ultimately creating toll-gate-style control.

2. The lithium-rebate program is a typical example: use upstream resource profits to secure about 80% of an automaker's purchases over the next three years, locking in orders and options with capital.

Overall 3: New questions and insights center on industry-chain concentration and energy security.

1. Although automakers loudly call for reducing dependence on CATL, its global power-battery share has still risen to 40.2% and capacity utilization is 94.86%, leaving shrinking room for competitors.

2. The global data-center power gap is expected to reach 268GW by 2030, and CATL's investments in hydropower stations and nuclear fusion should prompt researchers to focus on power infrastructure security and industry-chain governance in the AI-computing era.

Trainium?
