Quick Summary

This article is a public speech delivered by the General Manager of Marketing at Payoneer during a cross-border ecosystem conference, breaking down the phased evolution of Chinese companies’ global expansion and the tangible role of financial capabilities in driving overseas growth, with actionable insights for practitioners.

1. First, it outlines the core growth logic for global expansion today: three forces—new traffic sources, new markets, and brand value—are collectively pushing businesses to shift from simply exporting products to operating as true global entities. Notably, content commerce platforms led by TikTok Shop recorded 94% global GMV growth; emerging markets including Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa delivered strong growth momentum; and the independent DTC site segment is projected to grow 62% year-over-year, making brand building the dominant long-term direction.

2. Second, it maps the distinct requirements at each stage of overseas operations: in the 1.0 single-point operation phase, companies prioritize secure, low-cost, fast-settling cross-border collection services; in the 2.0 multi-market layout phase, the focus shifts to improving capital flow efficiency across multiple platforms and currencies; in the 3.0 global operation phase, companies need systematic capabilities covering global capital scheduling, cost control, and local regulatory compliance.

3. For practical decision-making when selecting cross-border financial services, businesses should not only compare fee rates, but also prioritize providers’ capabilities in unified global capital management, capital turnover efficiency, local compliance support, as well as value-added functions that directly reduce costs and losses, including foreign exchange risk management, new market resource connections, and intelligent risk control.

This article clearly lays out the growth logic, operational upgrade roadmap for Chinese brands expanding globally, and the supporting value of financial tools for brand globalization, providing actionable guidance for brands building long-term operational capabilities.

1. Brands need to accurately grasp prevailing channel and consumer trends: content commerce represented by TikTok Shop, which delivered 94% global GMV growth, is reshaping the full consumer decision journey from product discovery to purchase, emerging as a second growth curve for cross-border business; the independent DTC site segment is projected to grow 62% year-over-year, making DTC branding a critical growth path; fast-growing e-commerce markets in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East can help brands reduce overreliance on mature Western markets.

2. Global brand expansion requires corresponding systematic capability building: instead of relying solely on single-point traffic or supply chain advantages, brands need to build a global capital network covering multiple entities, channels and currencies, to coordinate the full operational chain including global revenue collection, foreign exchange, ad spend, logistics and warehousing, tax payments, supplier settlements, and overseas payroll.

3. Digital tools can be leveraged to reduce costs and improve efficiency: proactive foreign exchange management lowers currency exchange losses; providers’ ecosystem resources enable fast connections to new market channels, local tax, financial and operational resources; intelligent acquiring risk control cuts losses from fraudulent orders, supporting steady long-term brand growth.

This article summarizes core growth opportunities for cross-border sellers, priority capability building goals across different operational stages, and accessible service resources, helping sellers identify upgrade paths and mitigate operational risks.

1. First, identify high-priority growth opportunities: on the traffic side, content commerce platforms including TikTok Shop delivered 94% GMV growth, representing a core second growth curve; on the market side, fast-growing e-commerce sectors in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East allow sellers to move beyond cutthroat competition in mature markets; on the business model side, the independent DTC site segment is projected to grow 62% year-over-year, making it a critical path for brand development.

2. Build core capabilities aligned with your current development stage: in the single-point operation phase, prioritize secure, fast-settling, reasonably priced collection services; in the multi-market layout phase, focus on optimizing capital flow efficiency across multi-platform, multi-currency accounts; in the global operation phase, build systematic capabilities for global capital scheduling, cost control, and compliant operations.

3. Leverage official resources to proactively mitigate risks: use professional service providers’ programs such as the Olive Branch Initiative to access priority onboarding channels for premium platforms, and the Dandelion Initiative to access local services covering operations, tax, accounting and advertising; at the same time, hedge against risks including foreign exchange volatility and cross-border transaction fraud, using tools such as multi-currency local collection, target-rate foreign exchange conversion, and AI-powered intelligent risk control to reduce unnecessary losses and improve actual profit margins.

This article identifies development opportunities, phased upgrade paths and priority capability building focus areas for manufacturing companies expanding globally, helping factories better connect with cross-border channels and build global footprints.

1. Key business opportunities to capture: content commerce and independent DTC models are growing rapidly, while e-commerce demand is strong in emerging markets across Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Manufacturers with supply chain advantages can gradually shift from the traditional foreign trade supply model to cross-border retail operations across multiple platforms and markets, and even build own brands to capture higher product value add.

2. Build matching capital management capabilities as the business upgrades: as factories shift from single-point supply to global operations, they need to upgrade their capital management systems from basic collection and withdrawal to a global capital network supporting multiple entities, currencies and scenarios, covering full-chain capital needs including procurement payments, tax settlement, ad spend, and overseas staff payroll.

3. Leverage professional tools to reduce costs and expand customer reach: professional financial services such as multi-currency local collection and target exchange rate locking can cut foreign exchange losses—case studies of similar precision manufacturing firms show such tools can reduce exchange losses by 92% and lift profit margins by 12%; service providers can also connect factories to platforms and local operational resources, lowering barriers to new market entry.

This article breaks down cross-border industry trends, core pain points of companies at different operational stages, and service model upgrade directions, providing strong reference for all types of global expansion service providers to identify customer needs and optimize their service systems.

1. Accurately grasp industry development trends: Chinese global expansion companies are shifting from product export and single-point sales to systematic global operations; as the cross-border e-commerce sector approaches the RMB 3 trillion scale mark, the three core growth drivers are content commerce development, emerging market expansion, and DTC brand building. Accordingly, enterprise demand for services is shifting from single-function tool support to full-chain operational support.

2. Precisely identify core customer pain points: companies entering the global operation phase commonly face three shared challenges: first, fragmented systems caused by multiple bank accounts, payment service providers and operating entities, with no unified view of capital positions; second, inefficient global capital flows with multiple intermediate links, where unnecessary foreign exchange conversion and slow settlement continuously erode corporate cash flow; third, complex compliance requirements across markets, with risks including foreign exchange volatility and transaction fraud leading to direct profit losses.

3. Optimize service offerings: build open service ecosystems around customers’ full-chain operational needs; on top of core professional services, form ecological partnerships to connect customers with platforms, local tax, accounting, operational and legal resources, to support their new market expansion; at the same time, leverage technologies such as AI to improve service efficiency—for example, AI-powered risk control can identify over 1,000 risk features in milliseconds, balancing smooth payment experiences for users with effective risk prevention.

From the unique perspective of cross-border financial services, this article outlines the evolving operational stages, core business demands of global merchants, and feasible directions for ecosystem collaboration, providing practical reference for platforms to optimize merchant services and improve merchant recruitment and operations.

1. Accurately identify evolving merchant needs: as merchants upgrade from single-point operations to multi-market layout and global operation, they require more than just basic traffic and transaction rule support. On the capital side, they have urgent needs for unified capital management, efficient capital turnover, multi-currency settlement, and local compliance; on the expansion side, they need access to new market channels, as well as local operational, tax, accounting and advertising resources; on the risk side, they face practical needs for foreign exchange management and transaction anti-fraud solutions.

2. Explore feasible paths for ecosystem collaboration: platforms can form in-depth partnerships with cross-border financial service providers and other partners to, on one hand, build seamless full links for merchant onboarding and capital settlement—for example, launching dedicated onboarding channels similar to the Olive Branch Initiative to lower entry barriers for high-quality merchants; on the other hand, co-launch merchant enablement programs with service providers, such as practical training and resource matching activities under the Dandelion Initiative model, to help merchants quickly adapt to local operational rules.

3. Optimize platform operation and management: address common pain points for merchants operating globally, including helping resolve practical issues such as multi-entity capital collection and multi-currency settlement; build joint risk prevention and control systems with service providers to help merchants reduce foreign exchange losses and block fraudulent orders, improving merchant operational stability on the platform and delivering shared growth for platforms and merchants.

This article is a public industry speech by a senior executive at Payoneer, a leading cross-border payment firm. It presents the phased upgrade characteristics, core growth drivers, business model iteration directions of China’s cross-border expansion sector, and the evolving role of financial services, serving as a vivid industry sample for observing cross-border industry development.

1. New trends in industry development: China’s cross-border e-commerce sector is entering a new high-quality growth cycle approaching RMB 3 trillion in scale. Three forces—new traffic, new markets, and new value—are collectively driving companies to shift from product export to global operation, with landmark signals including 94% GMV growth in content commerce, rapid expansion in emerging markets, and projected 62% growth of independent DTC sites. Enterprise global expansion falls into three progressive stages: single-point operation, multi-market layout, and global operation, with core competitiveness shifting from single-point advantages to systematic capability building.

2. New challenges in industry development: as companies enter the global operation phase, their capital chains evolve from the linear “platform collection – domestic withdrawal” model to a complex network covering multiple entities, channels, currencies and scenarios. They commonly face new issues including fragmented systems, low capital flow efficiency, high complexity of global compliance, profit erosion from foreign exchange volatility, and frequent cross-border transaction fraud, meaning traditional single-function payment tools can no longer match enterprise operational needs.

3. New evolution of business models: cross-border financial services are upgrading from back-end payment tools to growth hubs supporting enterprise global operations. By building full-stack capabilities covering collection, capital optimization, expense management, global payment and operational efficiency improvement, combined with a service model that connects market, channel and ecosystem resources, these providers reduce the complexity of global enterprise operations. This new “finance plus ecosystem” model is emerging as a key development direction in the cross-border service sector.

Victor Yuan
