Quick Summary

This article centers on the debate over whether intelligent driving should be paid for, and why users are willing to pay for it long-term. Its core conclusion is that consumers only pay for the sustained value and trust delivered by intelligent driving systems. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Intelligent driving has achieved widespread adoption in China. From January to May 2026, the penetration rate of L2 and higher-level ADAS reached 70.1%, and high-level intelligent driving has even been rolled out to models priced under 150,000 yuan. However, standalone paid services for intelligent driving are still in an early stage: most users still view intelligent driving as a complimentary add-on when purchasing a car, and have not yet formed a habit of paying for it on an ongoing basis.

2. Huawei's Qiankun ADS Max will end its promotional pricing and return to full price starting July 1, 2026: a one-time purchase costs 36,000 yuan, an annual subscription costs 4,999 yuan, and a continuous monthly subscription costs 499 yuan. The coverage will also be expanded to include both urban and highway NCA scenarios, with final transaction prices subject to subsidies from partner automakers.

3. For general consumers deciding whether to pay, four core considerations should top the list: whether the system reduces driving fatigue, whether it is sufficiently stable, whether its experience is noticeably better than the basic version, and whether there is a clear responsible party in case of issues. The usage rate of intelligent driving with safety guarantees is far higher than that of systems without such safeguards. For example, after BYD introduced a safety guarantee for its parking assistance feature, the feature's usage rate jumped from 21% to 93%.

This article analyzes the current development status, payment trends and user demands of the intelligent driving industry, providing actionable insights for automakers designing their intelligent driving strategies. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Consumer trends: High-level intelligent driving has been extended to the mainstream price segment under 150,000 yuan, with penetration growing rapidly, and has become a core consideration for consumers when choosing a car. However, users have not yet formed a habit of paying separately for intelligent driving, and generally expect it to be included as a complimentary perk with vehicle purchase. Long-term market education is required to change this mindset.

2. User operations: Brands can learn from the safety guarantee model: after BYD introduced a safety guarantee for its parking assistance function, its usage rate surged from 21% to 93%. This demonstrates that clear responsibility attribution greatly boosts user trust and usage frequency. Brands can cultivate user willingness to pay by binding clear responsibility to their paid intelligent driving services.

3. Business model options: There are three proven paths available at present: bundling intelligent driving as a purchase perk to boost model competitiveness, offering direct-to-consumer (D2C) options or subscriptions via the brand's own closed user ecosystem, and partnering with third-party technology brands. When selecting a partnership model, brands should clarify rights, responsibilities and profit sharing in advance to avoid losing brand control.

The intelligent driving industry is currently transitioning from complimentary perks to standalone paid services, creating a host of new opportunities as well as notable risks. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Market opportunities: Intelligent driving has already penetrated into models priced as low as 100,000 yuan, with high-level offerings available in the mainstream under-150,000-yuan segment. User acceptance of intelligent driving continues to grow, and standalone paid services represent a new source of incremental revenue with substantial growth potential.

2. Model selection reference: The current dominant model of offering intelligent driving as a complimentary perk works well for quickly capturing market share, but it struggles to cultivate user payment habits. In the long run, sellers should gradually shift to a value-added service model. Sellers with a complete closed-loop of their own users and products enjoy higher user trust and lower barriers when rolling out D2C paid options such as one-time upgrades and subscriptions.

3. Risk warning: To cultivate user payment willingness, brands should not only emphasize R&D costs. The core is to deliver clearly perceivable value to users, and build a supporting service and responsibility system. Measures such as safety guarantees address users' hesitation to use the feature, which is necessary to drive sustained long-term payments; without these, even if paid services are launched, high renewal rates will remain out of reach.

The rapid popularization of intelligent driving has brought new product demands and business opportunities to vehicle manufacturers, while also raising new operational requirements. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Product design and manufacturing requirements: From January to May 2026, the penetration rate of L2+ ADAS in China reached 70.1%, and high-level intelligent driving has entered mainstream models priced under 150,000 yuan. Intelligent driving has become one of the core competitive factors for consumers choosing a car. Factories must prioritize intelligent driving configurations in new model R&D and manufacturing to keep up with market demand.

2. Business opportunities: Standalone paid intelligent driving is still in an early exploration stage. Opportunities for model innovation exist for both factories developing in-house intelligent driving and those partnering with third-party suppliers. In-house intelligent driving built on the factory's own end-to-end vehicle closed loop offers clearer responsibility attribution for D2C paid services, and faces lower barriers to implementation.

3. Key lessons for partnerships: If factories choose to partner with third-party intelligent driving suppliers to explore the B2B2C model, they need to clarify core divisions of labor in advance, including product definition, revenue sharing, after-sales responsibility, and OTA operation and maintenance. This avoids unclear rights and responsibilities that damage user experience, while also balancing the factory's brand control with the third-party technology brand's positioning.

The intelligent driving service industry is in a transition period from free complimentary access to standalone paid services, bringing new development trends and clear unaddressed industry pain points. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Industry development trends: Intelligent driving functions have completed widespread popularization, and direct-to-consumer paid services are the future direction of the industry. Three mature business models have emerged so far: the perk model (bundled with vehicle purchase), the automaker-owned D2C model, and the B2B2C model led by third-party suppliers. Direct-to-consumer charging by third-party technology service providers represents the latest exploratory direction.

2. Core customer pain points: For B-end automaker clients, partnering with high-brand-power third-party intelligent driving service providers often raises concerns about eroding their own product control and user relationships. For C-end users, they have not formed payment habits, remain uncertain about responsibility attribution for incidents, and are hesitant to use intelligent driving functions frequently.

3. Actionable solutions: For companies building D2C paid services, the core is to deliver clearly perceivable user value, while establishing a system of responsibility guarantees and continuous upgrade services. BYD's safety guarantee framework and Huawei's approach of tying pricing to service guarantees both effectively boost user trust and willingness to use, and are worthy of industry reference.

The intelligent driving industry has put forward new requirements for technology platforms, and third-party intelligent driving platforms are exploring the new cross-brand B2B2C model, with many actionable lessons and risks to avoid. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Core industry demand for platforms: Traditional third-party intelligent driving platforms rely primarily on a 2B model, with revenue generated per vehicle program, while R&D, computing power and maintenance costs remain ongoing. This structure makes it difficult to achieve sustained and stable profits, so the industry needs platforms to explore new sustainable profit models.

2. Latest explorations from existing platforms: Huawei Qiankun has built a basic framework for cross-brand direct-to-consumer charging, offering multiple pricing models including one-time purchase, annual subscription and monthly subscription. It has also launched an independent user operation entry in its app, attempting to build a technology brand similar to "Intel Inside" in the PC era, penetrating beyond vehicle brands to directly influence user purchasing decisions.

3. Risks to avoid: For companies pursuing the cross-brand B2B2C model, it is necessary to clarify product definition, revenue sharing, after-sales responsibility and OTA operation division of labor with partner automakers in advance, balance the platform's own brand influence with automakers' demand for product control, and address experience differences caused by hardware adaptation across different models to avoid damaging user trust in the brand.

This article summarizes the latest industry developments in China's paid intelligent driving sector, identifies core issues for D2C intelligent driving business models, and offers high reference value for industry research. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. New industry developments: Intelligent driving has now penetrated into 100,000-yuan level models, with high-level offerings reaching the under 150,000-yuan segment, and penetration continues to rise. The charging model for intelligent driving is shifting from configuration-based pricing tied to hardware to independent software service pricing. Third-party technology suppliers have started testing direct-to-consumer payment relationships, an unprecedented change for the industry.

2. New emerging industry problems: Past practice of automakers giving away intelligent driving as a free perk only completed education for user adoption, not education for payment. Users have not yet formed a habit of long-term payment. For third-party suppliers moving to D2C, it is necessary to restructure industry relationships to address multiple unprecedented new problems, including rights and profit distribution, brand positioning, and consistent experience across multiple models.

3. Research framework for business models: This article summarizes three current mainstream business models: perk-based, automaker D2C, and third-party B2B2C. It clarifies that a mature D2C model must meet four core conditions: users can perceive clear value, usage frequency is sufficiently high, pricing matches the experience, and the provider assumes responsibility for ongoing services, providing a clear analytical framework for future related research.
