Quick Summary

This article outlines the development status and strategic layout of China's three core content e-commerce platforms—Douyin, Kuaishou, and Xiaohongshu—after the implementation of new 2026 regulatory rules, delivering clear key industry insights and practical recommendations.

1. Core industry changes: China's first specialized regulation on live-stream e-commerce has officially entered into force. It requires mandatory labeling for AI streamers, cracks down on abusive "refund without return" practices, classifies influencer marketing as commercial advertising, and bans influencer promotion of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics, and health food. The industry has shifted from unregulated growth to compliant development, with low-quality players exiting rapidly and the market maturing into stock competition as the era of easy traffic growth fades.

2. Three-platform landscape: Douyin is the largest market leader currently in a defensive positioning; Kuaishou is a slower-growing follower pursuing aggressive transformation; Xiaohongshu is the smallest but fastest-growing challenger following a differentiated breakout strategy.

3. Practical recommendations for ordinary practitioners: White-label brands should focus on deep cultivation of a single platform to maximize traffic efficiency; formal brands should adopt an omni-channel layout, assigning different functions to different platforms. Long-term brand building drives stable repurchase, while the short-term quick-profit white-label model has very limited long-term viability.

This article analyzes the industry landscape shifts and consumer trends in content e-commerce following new regulatory rules, offering multi-dimensional guidance for brands on marketing and channel strategy.

1. Marketing adjustment: Tighter regulation has increased risks of influencer partnerships, squeezing marketing space for beauty and health categories, and completely banning influencer promotion of regulated products including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics and health food. Brands should reduce their share of influencer spending and shift to lower-risk branded in-house live streaming to control compliance risks.

2. Channel characteristics of the three major platforms: Douyin has the largest traffic scale, but customer acquisition costs keep rising, and paid ad ROI has dropped by half compared to previous years. The platform has rolled out multiple merchant support policies to lower operating costs. Kuaishou is pushing forward brand transformation, with current annual GMV growth for brands exceeding 50% and continuously improving infrastructure. Leveraging its strong "discovery and purchase decision" positioning, Xiaohongshu delivers a 47% higher conversion rate than Douyin for products priced above 3,000 RMB, making it ideal for converting high-net-worth consumers.

3. Layout recommendations: Brand building requires long-term investment to achieve stable repurchase. On Xiaohongshu, returning customers contribute 81% of revenue for brand merchants, with an average repurchase rate of 32%. Brands are well suited to an omni-platform layout, matching different platform characteristics to different business functions.

This article sorts through the latest 2026 policies and platform changes in content e-commerce, providing sellers with clear policy interpretation, risk warnings and opportunity recommendations.

1. Latest policy interpretation: The Measures for the Supervision and Administration of Live-Streaming E-commerce took effect in February 2026. Its core changes include mandatory labeling for AI streamers, which greatly squeezed the operating space for gray-market merchants that rely on edge practices; curbs on abusive "refund without return" practices and bans arbitrary platform penalties and traffic restrictions on merchants, easing sellers' return pressure to a certain extent; and it formally classifies influencer product recommendations as commercial advertising, which greatly increases the cost of non-compliant promotion.

2. Existing risk warnings: Traffic costs on Douyin continue to rise, with a 50% increase in CPM for Douyin's ad platform Juqianchuan over two years, cutting ROI by half for the same ad spend, while mid-tier and micro influencers deliver unstable conversion. Kuaishou's core business growth has slowed, facing pressure on user growth. Xiaohongshu has a smaller overall market size, with over 60% of merchants operating at a loss or with minimal profit, and multi-platform layout leads to high team operating costs.

3. Opportunities and layout recommendations: Douyin has launched nine merchant support policies to cut costs and allocate stable traffic to high-quality merchants; Kuaishou's brand transformation brings new traffic dividends; Xiaohongshu is well suited for high-ticket product categories. White-label brands should focus on deep cultivation on one platform to maximize traffic efficiency, while formal brands should pursue an omni-platform layout.

This article analyzes the latest changes in the content e-commerce industry, providing clear insights and business opportunities for factories on production transformation and e-commerce layout.

1. Changes in product development and design demand: Content e-commerce has transitioned from unregulated incremental growth to compliant stock competition. The old white-label model of copying hits and competing on price is increasingly unsustainable—this model generates no customer repurchase, forcing businesses to start from scratch repeatedly and making long-term operation extremely difficult. As both consumers and platforms increasingly value brand reputation and product quality, factories need to gradually shift from pure white-label OEM to building their own brands, prioritizing quality control and content asset accumulation. Only long-term brand building can deliver stable repurchase and sustainable revenue.

2. Business opportunities for factories with different positioning: Factories making mass-market affordable products can focus on deep cultivation on Douyin and Kuaishou to scale up by maximizing traffic efficiency. Factories making mid-to-high-end specialty products or intangible cultural heritage crafts can seize Xiaohongshu's cross-border expansion opportunity by building a presence on RedShop, Xiaohongshu's independent cross-border e-commerce platform, and pursue a differentiated "culture + quality goods" strategy to avoid red ocean competition.

3. Insights on digital transformation: AI is already widely used in content creation and platform governance in content e-commerce. Factories need to advance their own digital upgrades to align with platform algorithm rules and improve customer acquisition and operating efficiency.

This article sorts through 2026 development trends of China's content e-commerce industry, identifies core pain points across industry players, and clarifies business directions for e-commerce service providers.

1. Industry development trends: Content e-commerce has completed its transition from "growth first, regulation later" to "growth and regulation in parallel", raising compliance thresholds and operating costs, accelerating the exit of low-quality players, and entering an era of professional operation. The top three platforms have formed a differentiated landscape: Douyin is shoring up infrastructure to defend its core market; Kuaishou is betting on AI to push forward brand transformation; Xiaohongshu is pursuing breakout through differentiated user positioning. The overall industry has entered the stock competition stage.

2. Core customer pain points: Merchants broadly face rising traffic costs, falling paid ad ROI, high return rates, high multi-platform operating costs, and cash flow strains for small and medium-sized businesses. Platforms face widespread issues including AI content infringement, eroding user trust, stagnant traffic growth, and overly narrow monetization structures.

3. Potential business opportunities: Service providers can offer lightweight, cost-effective managed operation services to meet the multi-platform operation needs of small and medium-sized merchants; they can develop tooling products that help merchants analyze return reasons and boost customer repurchase; they can also develop AI content compliance services to meet regulatory requirements for AIGC content labeling and advertising compliance, matching strong market demand.

This article analyzes the strategic layout and existing challenges of China's top three content e-commerce platforms, summarizes industry demands and risks, and provides reference for the operation and development of all types of platform operators.

1. Core merchant demands for platforms: Merchants' top priorities today are lower operating costs, access to stable and predictable traffic, and reduced unreasonable rights losses. Merchants broadly express dissatisfaction with excessive traffic costs, unpredictable business outcomes, and arbitrary penalties and traffic restrictions. Platforms need to optimize rules, allocate stable traffic to high-quality merchants with high conversion rates and strong service standards, and lower merchants' operating and compliance costs.

2. Risks to avoid: Full compliance is required by regulators, and platforms must implement requirements such as AI content labeling and influencer advertising compliance, or face regulatory penalties. Platforms must balance the ecosystem of top and mid-micro influencers—excessive de-influencerization will lead to unstable overall conversion. They also need to avoid over-reliance on advertising revenue, and should quickly build out closed-loop e-commerce to achieve diversified monetization.

3. Reference operational practices: Douyin's approach of cutting merchant costs, improving logistics infrastructure, and using AI to crack down on infringement and rebuild user trust; Kuaishou's approach of reorganizing its organizational structure to support brand transformation and betting on AI to build a second growth curve; and Xiaohongshu's approach of building differentiated user positioning and pursuing differentiated global expansion are all valuable references for peer platforms.

This article sorts through the latest 2026 changes in China's content e-commerce industry, presents new trends and new issues of industrial development under new regulatory rules, and offers high reference value for industrial research.

1. New industrial trends: The underlying logic of regulatory policy has shifted from the early "growth first, regulation later" approach to "growth and regulation in parallel", raising industry compliance thresholds and accelerating the exit of low-quality players. The top three platforms have formed a differentiated strategic landscape: Douyin, as the market leader, adopts a defensive strategy to build a comprehensive e-commerce platform; Kuaishou, as the follower, adopts an offensive strategy to push forward brand transformation; Xiaohongshu, as the challenger, adopts a differentiated breakout strategy. The three platforms have developed three distinct business models: Douyin operates a traffic e-commerce model of "browsing entertainment + impulse purchase"; Kuaishou operates a trust e-commerce model of "follower loyalty + personal connection-based commerce"; Xiaohongshu operates a decision-oriented e-commerce model of "research reviews before purchase".

2. New industrial issues: The overall industry's traffic boom has ended, with top platforms broadly seeing slowing growth, high investment in new business incubation, and intense profit pressure: Xiaohongshu is valued as an e-commerce platform but still relies heavily on advertising revenue, and has not yet built a profitable closed e-commerce loop; Kuaishou's AI new business bet remains very small in scale, and its core business has lost growth elasticity; small and medium-sized merchants broadly face high costs and cash flow strains, and most cannot support long-term brand building.

3. Research insights: In the era of stock competition, differentiated user positioning is more valuable than raw traffic, long-term brand building is more sustainable than short-term traffic monetization, and compliance is the inevitable development direction for the content e-commerce industry.
