Quick Summary

This article introduces the background of domestic automotive thermostat leader Tianbo Intelligent’s upcoming IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and outlines the core challenges facing the company. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Company basics: Tianbo Intelligent has focused on the automotive thermostat segment for over 20 years as an undetectable industry champion. It ranked first in domestic thermostat revenue in 2024, counts all of China’s top 10 best-selling automakers among its clients, and delivered three consecutive years of revenue growth. In 2025, the company posted 1.961 billion yuan in operating revenue and 351 million yuan in net profit attributable to shareholders, and is scheduled for its IPO hearing on June 12 this year.

2. Core challenges: Tianbo’s Q1 2026 performance declined year-on-year. Nearly half of its current revenue comes from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, while battery electric vehicle (BEV) related revenue accounts for less than 6%, as its core thermostat product is not compatible with BEVs. Top client BYD has already reduced orders and brought part of production in-house. The company has long run R&D spending below industry peers, seen rising dependence on its largest client, and faced market controversy over its more than 6 billion yuan in cumulative pre-IPO dividends paired with a large new fundraising round.

Automotive component brands can draw multiple key insights on industry trends and operational strategy from this case, as outlined below:

1. Industry trends: China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) retail penetration has already surpassed 60%, pushing the auto components industry into a period of structural consolidation. Demand for traditional ICE vehicle components is shrinking at an accelerating pace, while the NEV thermal management track remains a fast-expanding blue ocean. Brands need to proactively adjust product lines to adapt to the electrification trend.

2. Operational risks: Leading automakers universally require annual price cuts for components, and are increasingly bringing core components in-house, squeezing third-party suppliers’ profit margins. Over-reliance on large clients weakens a supplier’s bargaining power, increases accounts receivable, and crowds out funding for R&D and transformation. Long-term R&D spending below industry peers also slows transformation and erodes product competitiveness.

3. Capital strategy: Large excess dividends ahead of an IPO easily trigger market questions over the rationality of a company’s capital planning, damaging brand reputation and complicating the listing process.

Sellers in the automotive component industry can draw clear opportunity insights and risk warnings from this case, with key takeaways below:

1. Industry shifts: With NEV penetration exceeding 60% in China, the industry is seeing clear structural divergence. Core NEV thermal management components remain a high-growth blue ocean, while demand for traditional ICE vehicle components continues to shrink. Sellers should adjust their product mix in a timely manner to align with the component needs of NEV makers.

2. Risk warnings: Annual price cut demands from leading OEMs compress suppliers’ profit margins, and leading clients are increasingly bringing core components in-house. Over-reliance on the top five major clients sharply reduces a business’s risk resilience, pushes up the share of accounts receivable, and crowds out cash flow needed for expansion and transformation.

3. Opportunity insights: Core thermal management components remain an essential automotive刚需. Businesses that deepen their focus on a niche segment and reach a leading industry position can secure stable partnerships with top automakers, and build long-term sustainable operations.

Traditional automotive component factories can draw key transformation insights from this case, as outlined below:

1. Product design and production needs: With BEV sales growing extremely fast, demand for traditional thermostats designed for ICE vehicle engines will gradually contract. Factories need to adjust their product development direction, and scale up R&D and production of core thermal management components compatible with BEVs.

2. Commercial opportunities: China’s NEV thermal management track continues to expand alongside growing NEV sales, and leading domestic automakers have stable demand for component suppliers. As long as traditional factories deepen their niche focus and reach a leading industry position, they can secure stable orders from top automakers and lay a solid foundation for growth.

3. Transformation takeaways: R&D investment and digital upgrading are the core supports for transformation. Long-term R&D spending below industry peers directly slows transformation progress and leaves businesses unable to keep up with industry technology iteration. Traditional factories need to increase R&D investment, while advancing digital upgrading to boost operational efficiency and competitiveness.

Service providers serving the automotive component industry can draw key insights on industry trends and client pain points from this case, as outlined below:

1. Industry trends: The automotive industry has fully entered the deep end of electrification transformation, and the thermal management track is undergoing systemic restructuring. A large number of established players focused on traditional ICE components face urgent transformation needs, creating broad market space for related services.

2. Core client pain points: Most traditional component suppliers have product structures that lag industry trends, face widespread risk of core clients bringing production in-house, and also grapple with a range of additional challenges: insufficient R&D capability, high reliance on large clients, weak cash collection, non-standard governance at family-owned firms, and limited experience accessing capital markets.

3. Business opportunities: Service providers can develop targeted offerings including R&D consulting, digital upgrading, client structure optimization, cash flow management, and IPO advisory to help traditional component firms complete electrification transformation, and meet their needs for growth and capital market access.

Platforms serving the automotive component industry can draw key insights on industry demand and risk mitigation from this case, as outlined below:

1. Industry demand: A large number of leading traditional component firms have demand for IPO financing and resource access, and need capital to support capacity expansion, R&D upgrading and electrification transformation. Many established niche leaders already hold top industry positions, and qualify for platform partnership.

2. Risk mitigation: When vetting prospective onboarding or listing candidates, platforms should prioritize reviewing the rationality of a firm’s product structure, transformation logic, and capital planning. Firms should flag potential red flags including declining performance, over-reliance on large clients, and large fundraising immediately following oversized pre-IPO dividends, to mitigate platform risk.

3. Sourcing and operations: Niche leaders in the NEV thermal management track are high-quality targets, and component makers with deep niche focus and product lines aligned with the electrification trend have strong long-term growth potential. Platforms can prioritize these firms for sourcing and service to optimize the structure of onboarding businesses.

Automotive industry researchers can draw insights for industry research direction from this case, as outlined below:

1. New industry dynamics: China’s NEV retail penetration has already surpassed 60%, and the automotive component industry has officially entered a knockout phase of structural consolidation. Niche leaders in the traditional ICE component space are now at a transformation crossroads, and the transformation paths of these leading firms represent a critical research sample for the industry.

2. Emerging industry problems: Traditional leading firms face multiple systemic transformation challenges, including misaligned product structures, in-source substitution risk from core clients, slow transformation driven by insufficient R&D investment, elevated accounts receivable risk from over-reliance on large clients, and corporate governance issues exposed by large pre-IPO dividends. All of these are new industry problems worthy of in-depth research.

3. Business model research: The traditional original equipment manufacturing model that ties component firms to leading automakers is facing disruption from in-house development and production by OEMs in the electrification era. The fitness of this legacy model and exploration of new business models will become new core directions for automotive component industry research.
